Smile New Build, would really appreciate a look.

Hi, thanks for reading.

My basement buddy has decided that his 10 month old computer is now too old, and since he has a bit of money right now, he wants to use it on a brand new system. Here a few specs for his "old" computer.

ASUS P5K LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2
Seagate Barracuda 320GB x 2
CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX 520W
ASUS Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive
LITE-ON 20X SATA DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe
RAIDMAX SMILODON ATX-612WB Black
Microsoft Windows XP Home

Yeah, pretty old, huh? Anyway, ... Here are a few items we've picked out, (we meaning me, as he says 1/2 a sentance, and walks away). Don't need any input devices, monitor, or speakers. Just the tower. Might go water cooling this time. Not gonna overclock, but he wants to make sure he doesn't have to worry about anything.

There doesn't seem to be a budget, and the computer will be used mainly for games, like Crysis, CoD 4 and CoD 5: World at War. Also Supreme Commander. Lots of movies and music.

Will be using Windows XP. Current total is a little above $1,300. There are a few MIR's, but I'm sure everything will change before we actually place the order. I've got G Skill for my own build, and I'm very pleased with the way it's held up. Can't see using anything else unless it's not in the QVL. I've tried to make sure most of the hardware is Certified for Windows Vista, in case he wants to make that jump in a few months. Then we won't have to worry about anything.

Any and all comments welcome. Again, thanks for reading.

Your 'basement buddy' has too much money really. I presume you're building this computer for him, if so what you've got there isn't going to improve things a whole amount. Because that PC has a lot of new stuff in he could probably recycle a lot of stuff from there. Personally I'd keep the motherboard, stuff in a new Quad Core processor, upgrading to an 8800GT isn't worth it, look at the new ATi 4870, they're the best at the moment. As for RAM, unless you DO decide to get a new board I'd just get another pair of 2GB Corsair RAM, reliable. The Power Supply will definitly need upgrading, I'd look at one of the higher powered Corsair units.

Other than that the rest is just luxuries, the DVD drive doesn't need upgrading, it's already just as fast as the ones your planning to buy new, you already have a perfectly able case. And personally you're just silly if you do buy new stuff as most of that is fine.

Unless he really needs a second computer, most of that build can be reused...I would only upgrade the CPU, RAM, and GPU.

CPU looks good, but 1066 RAM isn't needed. Go with the 800 instead. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

For the video card, if you're looking in the $150-$200 range, I would go with the Radeon 4850. It's worlds better than the 8800 for about the same price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Radeon+HD+4850

One true upgrade you could make is to put a blu ray drive in it.

Current motherboard is broken, has some bent pins that got damaged when a 3rd harddrive was being added. Nothing from the existing pc will be used for the new build. It will be used as an extra computer in the family room or something.

Specifications on the motherboard says it natively supports 1066, so maybe I should go with that RAM after all?

Was thinking of adding an old video card to the existing computer, and using the current card for the new build, but why bother spending $1,000 and use an old card with that new stuff?

Looking at a different video card now:
EVGA 01G-P3-1280-AR GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail $449.99

We'll keep an eye on it and see if it drops, or if it's available from another vendor for less. Found it with Assassins Creed for the same price, not sure if the game will every be played though. I guess a free game is still a free game.

Gotta find a different PSU, I'll take a look and post back later. Thanks again.

No, you don't need to. With that processor it will make zero difference.

As for the 280, it's okay. You can find much better value from the new 4800 ATi cards (4850, 4870), but the 280 does perform a bit better than the 4870. You also may want to look out for the new 4870 X2, which should be coming out sometime in the next couple weeks.

I would look at the newer P5Q series MB. The P45 chipset performance wise is about equal but if your building today you might as well get some of the new features like PCI 2.0 support.

Agree with others and would suggest looking at the 4870 for a video upgrade right now unless Nivdia really drops there prices. You get a lot more bang for the buck.

If it is mainly a gaming machine and he is not planning on OC'ing the system I would stick with the E8400 duel core. It is a faster chip natively and so far there is really no reason to have a quad for gaming.

Nice board, and good price too, but going with the PRO, the Deluxe didn't seem to have anything extra that would be used.

Thinking about this case instead of the one posted, BUT...there doesn't look like enough cooling for the harddrives.

Found a good 4870 at a good price, with a free game too! Grid. Don't know anything about the game, but free is free.

BTW, taking your advice and going with the faster (and cheaper,) Core2Duo.

Drop that RAM and get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184

If you're getting that RAM cause of the look, try this instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145176

You won't, and most likely can't, fully utilize DDR2-1200, so it's a waste of money to actually put it in your system. The RAM you selected will work, it'll just step itself down to a slower speed, so there's no reason to get it. You can get 4gb DDR2-800 for less than the price of 2gb DDR2-1200, so I'd do that instead.

Agree with jon on the RAM. And I hope the 'look' isn't important because your case doesn't have a window.

Ok, I believe you, but I'm just a bit puzzled, because the Memory Standard listed on the motherboard is DDR2 1200. Shouldn't I try to match that? Or is it not going to matter because of the processor that was selected?

No, we're not concerned about the looks, it was the first good pair of DDR2 1200 we found. Not a large selection in that speed.

On a side note, change the tower again. The Cosmos went up to $200.00, so we're thinking of other options. But it did have free shipping, that should be considered also. This one comes with a power supply that we can throw away later. Pretty sure we'll stick with this one, unless there's a better price on a similar item. Would also like to find one that has the harddrives slide in from the side, and not from the back of the tower.

You want to match the CPU. The motherboard spec list shows the maximum supported by the board. For that CPU, the exact match is actually DDR2-667 (Half of the 1333Mhz FSB). But you can use DDR2-800 just fine.

That case is fine, just be sure to swap the power supply out for the OCZ you listed.

Thanks for the confirmations about the video card and memory. Going to start order parts today, everything that has an MIR or a combo. I'll wait on a few other items to see if they have an MIR in August, then place an order for everything else tomorrow or next week.

Found the tower I've been looking for!!

7 x 120 mm fans, 1 x 80 mm fan, 6 internal 3.5" bays that feed from the side, and not in front of the video card. Even better, ... It's only $119 after the MIR!! WOOT!! It has some great reviews too, not as many as the Cosmos 1000, but this tower really made me say "WOW!". Hopefully I won't be disappointed once it arrives.

My buddy says we should order two sets of the G.Skill at that price, and run with 8 GB. LOL!

Read something on microsoft.com about a 3/GB swith in the boot.ini file. Not sure that would work in XP though.

32bit Windows XP is only going to recognize about 3GB of that 4GB, just to warn you. I'd still buy all 4.
