There are very few places that sell components to make laptops and there isn't really a standard layout on the components to make them interchangeable.

I attended an Intel class a couple years ago and they were kind of "pushing" for dealers to build custom laptops for retail. The biggest issue that I heard from dealers was not being able to be price competitive with the mass producers.

Also, why aren't there any "gaming laptops" I hear about? There are plenty of gaming desktops!

There are many gaming laptops, just not alot you build yourself for the reasons already listed. Custom build laptops are basically kits where most decisions have already been made and the choices you have to upgrade are very limited. It is not like building a desktop where just about anything fits in an ATX case. Laptop MB are part and parcel with the case, and the same goes for the PSU, keyboard, and monitor. Also, slots for things like burners, HD, etc are very limited and built in. So, your choices are basically limited to the speed of the processors, within a given type. The video card, which you might have 1-2 to chose from. And how much ram you have. Everything else is pre-determined by the case you purchased.
With so few choices it is very hard to build something cheaper than a company. They have the same few choices, and can buy items in bulk. They also have the option of actually buildiing a case for the system which you generally cant do. So if you want a laptop which is a decent gamer look for one with a dedicated video card and fast processor. if you want an extream gamer then you are best visiting specialty sites like Alienware that specialize in them. They make some lap tops that are really almost folding desktops they are so big and heavy, but they are very powerful. Kat
