<$500 Gaming rig
I only have ~$500 USD to spend on a new rig, the only reqs it has to meet are that it can play WoW, has a high-decent degree of possibility to play Diablo 3 and can still function well enough to run Microsoft/Open Office for school projects. Cost is the limiting factor here so I am willing to compromise on technology until I can afford upgrades (If possible I would rather work with windows XP rather than Vista).
The entire PC would be from scratch, though it may be possible to get a monitor for free from friends, and the mouse/keyboard are almost definitely free. Is there any way to build this for the money alloted? Thank you very much for your help. P.S. I have tried somewhat to find the parts myself, unfortunately I have gone over the budget. The pieces I have found are listed below along with their price. Abit I-45CV Socket 775 Barebone Kit - Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.20GHz OEM, 1GB DDR2 PC4200, ATX Mid-Tower Case, 450 Watt Power Supply - $179.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0748&CatId=333 Maxtor DiamondMax 21 500GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM - $69.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...3621&CatId=139 Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM ATAPI/E-IDE Drive - 16x DVD-ROM, 48x CD-ROM - $19.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...76381&CatId=88 Cooler Master X Dream 4 CPU Cooling Fan - Socket 775, Copper Core, Aluminum Fins - $14.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...537&CatId=1588 XFX GeForce 8800 GT Video Card - Alpha Dog Edition, 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card - $119.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=P450-8830 DCLCD by Sceptre DCL20A 20.1" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 5ms, 1000:1, WSXGA+ 1680x1050, DVI with HDCP, VGA(D-sub), Built-In Speakers, 16:10 Aspect Ratio - $179.99 Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2 OEM Version - $139.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0&Sku=M17-7503 total=$717.93 before shipping. |

It's pretty impossible to build a semi-gaming rig for $500, especially when you spend $300 on an OS and monitor.

1) I wouldn't reccommend tigerdirect. Lots of horror stories.
2) The tower you might be able to do for about $500, if you choose your parts right. Including the monitor and O/S for that amount...unless you go with an inexpensive dell, you won't be able to hit that target price. 3) What do you have now? (PC, monitor, O/S) Do you plan on keeping it in addition to this new rig?

Current rig is:
Asus P5N-E SLI mobo Pentium D 3.00 GHz GeForce 8600 GT 2 gigs 533(?) RAM LG DVD/CD-RW Samsung DVD/CD-ROM 80 GB SAMSUNG eide HD 500 GB Western Digital eide HD Turtle Beach sound card SOYO 22" ws monitor WinXP pro As you can sort of tell, this is a Frankenstein's monster that has simply been upgraded whenever I had the cash. Unfortunately this rig needs to stay whole and intact at my house for various reasons, though I just remembered that I have a spare 400w power supply and 80 GB hd lying around somewhere. The new rig will be in a dorm room and eventually be a gift to one of my siblings (one of the reasons the current rig needs to stay at home). So I guess the next question is what would be the cheapest estimated price for a pc that meets the reqs in the op? Is ~$700 going to be it, or is there some way for me to cut costs? Obviously as a student I am trying to pinch pennies wherever I can. |

I tried to hit your $500 mark but as stated above it's pretty impossible to do so. Here's a parts list from Newegg that I came up with.

Raidmax power supplies are of low quality, so building a computer with them would be risky. If you can reuse your old 80GB hard drive and buy an inexpensive CRT monitor, this list of part should get you to around $500 for the whole system:
