You want to upgrade this computer? What do you do with it? And how much were you looking to spend?

My suggestion is to skip the upgrade and just build a whole new computer when you have enough money.

Is your current computer not doing something that you wish it could do (or do faster)? It's not a bad computer spec-wise...except for the CPU and RAM. If you can find a dual core AM2 Athlon for cheap and some PC2 6400 (DDR2 800) RAM it would give the computer a little more horsepower to play with.

That's the proposed new build? Well, I'm not sure what you're looking to do with it, but that looks like a very low end $300 workstation to me. Is that what you're aiming for?

Yeah that is what I am aiming for...
and when you said very low what exactly do you mean by that?...because my home pc is not even close to the above spec , but the speed is fine and all working ok.
please be more spcific

It all depends on what you need to do. If that's all you need, then that's all you should get.

It's kind of hard to tell the exact performance of each of those parts though, the CPU and mobo aren't even on newegg anymore, and I'm too lazy to hunt further.

You dont need to buy another heatsink. If you get your CPU retail, it will come with one and the fan.

cool guys

Ok I see what you mean...
well I did not that cpu comes with the heatsink ok geting some where.
I think I have come up with this list, because i kind of checked what people have been talking about on here and thought I should base my first system on the similar spec.?
It's my first pc to build , once I get the grip I should be able to balance things...first time for every thing... all I really want some one to advice on parts.
but if what I have come up with as a list is fine, so will go for it then
thanks

Maybe it's just me, but I'm a bit confused now.

Are you building a completely new computer, or are you adding a few parts?

If buildning new, what is your budget, cause we can help you put one together that will be better then what you listed above.

If you're just adding parts, what do you already have, and what do you need.

Are you in the US?

Regarding your build, I would take a look at making a few changes. You will need to add a case since you don't have one in your list, the power supply in your list is most likely of poor quality since I can't find any reviews on it and it is not branded. If you are building an AMD computer, it would be a good idea to go with a dual core and faster ram. A last thing you should take a look at is getting an optical drive. Here is a parts list which has higher performance/ better quality parts than in your parts list and will cost a bit over $300 :

Im not sure why you need a network card. Your motherboard will have built in LAN. I would look at getting a different CPU: an AMD Athlon64X2 like Masaki recommends. It is not much more money. I dont really understand building a whole new PC that is already very out of date. Also, you only need a floppy drive if you happen to still use floppies (or you could take the one out of your old PC). I havent used a floppy in years. You really dont need a 650W power supply. 400w range would be plenty.

I need a net work card because you will connect it to your router from out side your PC box and without that you can not access the net. Modem does the same job but I am using a broad band…
What is wrong with my CPU? Please try and expand a bit, don’t just recommend something without a very clear reason.
I use floppy from time to time…so I need it.

All new motherboards have integrated network cards which work well, no reason to get an additional unless you want to turn your computer into a router. The reason why you should get a Athlon X2 over a Sempron is because the Athlon X2 has one more core, more cache and higher frequency than the Sempron and only costs a bit more. An Athlon X2 will give you much higher performance than a Sempron.

Thumbs up Masaki

Hello My friend

Now you are talking...lol lol lol

You are wright...I had something else in mind and wrote a different thing. I wanted to say ethernet card. not network card unless you want to link computers on a network.

Ok I have made few changes:

Hard drive:
320GB Maxtor-Seagate SATA2 7200
£26.95 exc. VAT
£31.67 inc. VAT

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ 2.50GHz (Retail AM2)
£37.95 exc. VAT
£44.59 inc. VAT

I have also read about the them two, but as a learner I will go for Athlon, but my next PC build will have sempron...just need to feel the difference.

feel free to comment
thanks

Why would you go back to an older, outdated technology for your next build? I'm so confused.

Network card usually refers to Ethernet (10Mb/s), Fast Ethernet (100Mb/s), or Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mb/s). All of these formats are backwards compatible, so it is easier to call them all network cards rather than naming them by their speeds. If you have a normal router and normal broadband modem, you don't need another network card. Generally ethernet cables can be used for connecting to modems, routers, networks and other computers.

It true what you are saying, but If my mother board hasn't got a built in Lan I will need a net work card to connect to my router.

The motherboard you refer to, the Asus M2N-MX SE, does have built in LAN/ethernet/networking.
