That's a lot of money.
I'd get an aftermarket cooler if you plan on overclocking. |

Not to take away from this thread, but didn't you just do a build? Wasn't that a gaming build?
And I remember you having problems, did you ever get those fixed? And in another thread just a day or so ago, you asked for a low budget build. Don't get me wrong, that build will be a beast, but it's not worth that much money. You could cut the cost down greatly while only losing marginal performance. And you should really get a psu that is on slizone. The corsair 1000 would work.

Benchmarks show that the new WD6400AAKS drives outperform the Raptors in raw throughput and have the advantage of being 640GB as oppposed to 150GB. Although if you are set on the Raptors, this would be a good choice.

Unless you have some strong brand loyalty going on with Nvidia or think "Crossfire" sounds worse than "SLI", I suggest waiting 7 more days until the ATI 4870X2's are released.
Whether they're faster, slower, or the same as the GTX 280, I bet you'll win with the inevitable price shake up that happens. There is really no good reason to go with a regular raptor over the faster 7200 drives, except maybe nostalgia. If money is no object and you want the fastest, then get the Velociraptor instead. |

If heat is needed to be controlled a personally dont want water cooling but if you go air cooling i would get an after market cpu cooler eitherway and a case, instead of xclo would be the NXZT Tempest with some dual-fan pci port coolers =]

Expected date is 8/12/08. But since a graphics card release date is not included in "death and taxes".....can't comment on whether its "for sure".

If you want to make a really high end gaming computer for yourself, I would suggest waiting for the Nehalem processors and X58 motherboards (should have support for both SLI and Crossfire) which will come out in October. Clock for clock, Nehalem should be around 40% faster than Q9xxx series Quad Cores.

Isn't the Nehelem suppose to be coming out to the mainstream next year? Right now I've heard it's only being released for servers and such.
If you're going with the 790i, I would go for the EVGA brand, it's $100 bucks less. It's the one in my rig right now and it overclocks quite nicely. Just make sure to get recommened memory as the 790i is extemely picky. I went with Corsairs XMS series and it works great. And unless you're doing lots and lots of multitasking, video encoding, etc.. I would save a ton and go for the E8500 processor which just dropped in price to $185 I believe. I have the 8400 version and it overclocks like a beast. I can get it to 4.2 on air with an AC Freezer Pro 7. I have a Raptor too and I gotta tell ya, 2 of those are going to be Loud! There is nothing overwhelming about the speed though and I'm sure the 7200 recommended above would give you way more bang for your buck. I agree you should wait for the new cards to come out, ATI is coming out with the 2gb ddr5's. I'm not sure if they'll be faster than the 280's, but Nvidia is bound to drop the price again. |

The 4870X2s outperform the 280s by a fairly significant margin (maybe a solid 10-15%, haven't looked at reviews in awhile). There have been some reviews out for awhile now. And if nothing else, prices across the board will drop again, hopefully.

The lower end Nehalem for the high end platform is supposed to cost $284 and motherboards should be in the $300-$400 range depending on features. Mainstream Nehalem isn't coming out until Q3 2009 if Intel roadmaps are anything to go by.
