Anyone want to rate and help out my first build?
This is my first time building a computer, so I need some help on it. I already asked for help on GameFAQs, and they helped me out a lot, but since this is my first time doing this, I want to be 100% sure everything is good before I dish out all this money.
I'm going to be using this computer mainly for browsing the web and playing some games. I'm not an intense gamer who needs the latest stuff though. My extreme limit I can go is $1000, but I don't really want to go that high if I don't absolutely have to. If I can get away with less than $900, I'd love that. So here's what I have so far: GPU: SAPPHIRE 100242L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102747 $170 Mobo: DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136038 $120 Ram: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098 I have 2x that, so it's 4GB all together $90 Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 $60 PSU: FSP Group AX500-PN ATX2.2 500W Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104037 $60 Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 RC-534-KKN2-GP Black Aluminum & Mesh bezel / SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119106 $53 DVD Drive: ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model DRW-2014S1T - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135165 $32 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 $195 Monitor: Acer V193W b Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009139 $180 Total Cash: $959 ![]() That's all I have so far. It looks good to me, but I have a few problems with it. 1. Does that DVD drive let me burn CDs and DVDs? If not, which should I get? 2. What do I need to be able to wirelessly connect the computer to my router? Same goes for Bluetooth. What do I need to connect my phone to my computer with bluetooth? 3. And most importantly, will all that stuff go together easily without any compatibility issues? Last edited by zamp07; 08-09-2008 at 09:34 PM. |

Also, what do you recommend for a mobo? |

if you want to go wireless, check out Rosewill Wireless G PCI card with external antenna. It is as fast as being wired.

Asus P5Q is our standard recommendation. DFIs can be very picky boards.
I'd also spend a tad more on the PSU. That is one place to never cut corners and 430w is a bit low for that machine. Here is a winning option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104037

EDIT: New Mobo
Hows this mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188015 The poster at GameFAQs recommended an EVGA when I said that you guys didn't like the DFI, and a few friends recommended the EVGA, so I'll most likely go with this one. And thanks, I just changed the PSU. And after I realized I was spending $900+, I decided I'm not going to get a wireless card. Even though they aren't extremely expensive, it'll probably push me over the 1k mark, and I'd rather have my actual specs be better. I can always just used wired internet too, so it's no biggie. If you're buying a Radeon video card (which I'd stick with), why shell out for an SLI board?

I have no idea. >_> Like I said, this is my first time building a computer, so I don't know exactly how compatible the parts are.
What motherboard would you recommend? The GameFAQs poster still says to use DFI, but some peeps I've talked to on AIM say they aren't that great, but they don't give me any good ones that are in my price range. They're giving me like $150+ boards, but I probably can't pay more than $120 or so, unless I cut back somewhere else. I don't really want to do that though. =/ |

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131295
Alternatively, a wireless version of the same board for $30 more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131296 |

Awesome, thanks. That one looks nice and most of the top reviews are all positive, when all the others had a few negatives at the top.
![]() But when looking at the review for the non-wireless one, someone said this: "If you are concidering this MOBO make SURE u buy a PSU that has an 8-PIN CPU power connector. This is indicated by EPS12V." My PSU says it as 1 x 12V ( 4-Pin ). Is that the CPU connector? If so, does that mean the CPU and Mobo aren't compatible? |

The Asus P5Q does have the 8pin connector. The Newegg photo shows 4, but the other 4 are there with a cap on top.
I checked your manual and it does indeed say to use an 8pin connector for that power source. Here are a couple of other options for power supplies that have an 8pin connector. Seasonic 500w: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151040 Or, this is a good deal if you don't mind the rebate: OCZ 600w: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341010 Both are high quality brands that will easily power your system. |
