upgrade
I am looking at upgraging my sisters computer that I built for her many years ago.
its a asus p4p266 with a p 2.0 cpu. and xp-home. I am looking at the asus p5B-mx with a intel core2 cpu and 1 gig of ddr2-667 ram any comments on this board ? all she uses it for is normal internet, small games from increda-mail, and bill paying on line. |

Would actually get this board instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...1288&Tpk=p5kpl
You could combine that with some ddr2-800 as well, and put in a e7200. Seems like that would be more then enough for her needs.

How much space do you need?
I would get seagate 7200 series sata drives. |

well so far to date, she has only used about 1/3 of a 40 gig drive, so the smallest would be fine.

ok, looking at the manual for the motherboard, it shows a power connector with 24 pins, plus one with 4 pins for 12 volts at the cpu.
do I need to also buy a new power supply with a 24 pin power connector ? or can I use the same power supply that has a 20 pin connector and the 4 pin 12 volt connector for the cpu ? |

I believe you would need one with a 24 pin and a 4 pin.

If you also want a case this is a good one for a budget build: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811153089
For just a power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104045 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103012 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341012 |

I believe that ocz one is the same one i'm using in my new build now. Just put it together yesterday or so. Seems good, especially for that price with the rebate.

well, now I have a asus p4b266 with a 2 gig northwood and 1 gig of ram, all connected together on my bench top, with PS, FD, CD drive, HD, and a new install of XP home, and other software with a LCD 15" monitor running, you should have seen the look on my sisters face when she seen it all running that way.
I just need a case to put it all in, and I will have a new free system, this makes number 5, I knew there was a reason I keep old discarded parts when I do upgrades. |
