new build, dual purpose
I'd like to build a new pc that would above all else be fast. Real fast. In addition, I'd like to use it as a combination conventional desktop...using a monitor and htpc/pvr using a large screen LCD or plazma TV. So sometimes, I'd like to use the TV and record and watch directv and sometimes I'd like to use a monitor and use it as a conventional desktop. I'd like to record TV shows, like a tivo, and play them back. So, I'd want to be able to easily switch between TV mode and desktop mode.
I'd also like it to be quiet within reason. I'd like top quality parts. Can anyone help with a parts list? |

Hard to say without a budget. With computers, speed is very relative to how much money you want to fork out.
For someone who wants to spend under $600 a Pentium Dual Core 2220 or an AMD Athlon 6000 is very very fast indeed. But both those processors are slow if you have $1200 to spend.

OK here's an attempt at a list of parts, but I'm not at all sure that it's a good list>

if your TV recordings are high quality then you want a better card than onboard video. For example, if you want to watch HD or blueray you might need a higher end one.
