Thumbs up New Gaming PC

Not really on too tight of a budget. Any suggestions or comments on any parts on this list would be wonderful or suggestions about what to expect when I am putting it all together (this will only be my second time building a PC from scratch and it has been a long time since I did the first one). I will probably overclock the parts a bit but not too much. I am a noob to overclocking. I will mainly be playing CS, CS:Source, Team Fortress 2, WoW, Warcraft 3, and Diablo 3 when it comes out. Since I am a sophomore in college I will also use it for doing homework, watching movies, playing music, using FRAPS, maybe a little messing around in Photoshop and Vegas for picture/movie editing.

So far I have purchased the case, power supply, and hard drive, here they are:

Case
RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX-612WEB 1.0mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811156078

Power Supply
CORSAIR 750watt ATX12V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=corsair%20750

Hard drive
WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

The rest of the parts I plan on buying within the next week:

CPU
INTEL Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

RAM
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

Video Card
EVGA GeForce 260
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130372
OR
VISIONTEK or HIS Radeon 4870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814129113

CD Drive
SONY NEC Optiarc Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827101131

Motherboard
YOU DECIDE I don't know what to look for when buying a motherboard so help me out on this one.

Operating System
Probably Windows Vista 64 bit since I have 4 gigs of RAM. Don't know which version though; Ultimate, Basic, Home, Premium, etc.

Edit: Switched the 9800+ video card with the 260 after seeing the prices for the 260.

Looks pretty good. I'd go with a SATA, not IDE optical drive. And I'd also get a DVD Burner instead of a just a DVDROM.

Check out the Asus P5Q Pro motherboard.

For Vista, go with Home Premium.

Since your budget is not too tight, you might look at this vid card:

Alright guys I'm gonna order everything I need on the list. Everything is the same except for some switchouts:

RAM
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit
^ Upgraded from the G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 800 (PC 6400) for just $10 more. ^ what is the difference between the numbers?

Video Card
Leaning towards the Visiontek 4870 but still thinking about usnavyretired's comment on the Superclocked 260. HELP.

CD/DVD Burner
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model iHAS220-08 - Retail

Motherboard
ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
^ Theres a nice bundle deal with the 8400 CPU with this mobo ($35 off) <3 NewEgg

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium - OEM

What resolution is your monitor and do you play with AA. If your monitor is >1680x1050, the 896MB frame buffer on the GTX 260 will help with new games and with AA.

Here is the DVI monitor I will be using. I bought this quite a while back when DVI was somewhat new.

SAMSUNG 710T-BK Black 17" 12ms LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 600:1
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001164

AA isn't a big deal for me but if I can play with it w/o slowing me down then sure.

Alright guys parts should be here either tomorrow or Friday. I'll post back if I encounter any problems or have any questions while building this new PC.

Do you guys recommend getting a new heatsink or just getting some good thermal paste for my cpu? It comes with what looks like some hardened thermal paste already on it.

Unless you're overclocking, just use the retail heatsink, and the thermal pad that is on it. That will be fine for stock use.

Ok just did my first bootup, everything seems to be on and running but nothing is showing up on my monitor. I think something is wrong with the graphics card, cuz it has 2-3 little red lights lit up on it when I power on and the video card fan sounds really really loud. Also the front panel on my case has 3 led stripe lights accross it which are supposed to be all green but when I power on, only the middle one lights up and it lights up red...

Did you plug in the power cable to the video card?

Yes I have the two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors plugged into the card. I have also made sure the dvi connection on both the monitor and video card are plugged securely.

Check the monitor for a switch to select between DVI and VGA inputs. Older monitors had a manual selector with
VGA being the default.

I have already tried this. My monitor has a SOURCE button and will cycle through both VGA and DVI connections trying to find a source. I've tried booting up and let it find a source but it doesn't find one. I have also tried using a VGA dongle adapter to try my VGA monitor instead but alas the same results.

Check all of your power connections on the board. If they are all in place, try this; PROBLEMS with a NEW BUILD? Try This!!

Do I have to partition or whatever my new harddrive before I install Vista or can I do this through the Vista installation?

Ok got Vista installed and everything going smooth. I need help with one thing, my graphics card is running hot 80+ Celsius it says in the Catalyst control center. I've read you can control fan speed from here but I can't find it anywhere.

I guess Catalyst Control Center doesn't have fan controls for the 4870? I just found a fan fix solution for manually changing the fan speed.

I use ATI Tools (do a google search on it) to adjust my fan settings.
