Building a kinda Gaming PC
You all helped me build a computer here about 4-5 years ago. I'm trying to salvage some of the parts that are still usable but I need suggestions on the rest? I do a little photo editing, minor video editing, lots of World of Warcraft and Magic The Gathering and of course email, office productivity and iTunes. I'll be running XP Home on this and also Unbuntu possibly. No vista.
Parts that I think will still work: I can't figure out what kind of case I have. I believe it's an Antec case though, but I'm thinking it will work. The form factor hasn't changed much from 3-4 years ago right? If the form factor has changed dramatically does anyone know of a good sleek looking case that is tool-less. I don't want a bunch of crazy LED's and stuff. Just a nice sleek design. My power supply says Antec on it. With a 500W sticker. It's the type of power supply where you can add and subtract cables as you need them. All the cables are braided in such is 500W still good today? I have a Lite-On DVD R/W that should still work ok. It's a PATA connection. I also have a 74GB WD Raptor HD that I'm gonna use for the time-being. I want to eventually get a secondary HD for crap. I also have a Zalman PC Cooler. Not sure if this works though with the newer processors. It's currently attached to a ASUS IC7 MLB with a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor not sure about the socket type or anything. I also have some extra fans. Just says Stealth on it. Not sure about my RAM. I have 2x512MB and it says Corsair ValueSelect VS512MB400. I believe it's DDR. Will this work in any MLB's or should I toss it? Alright here's what I'm thinking about buying from the research I have done. Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037 This processor seems to be the cookie cutter build. I see this processor everywhere it must be the one to get? It just so happen the processor is a combo with this MLB. Is this a good MLB? Or is it overkill for what i want to do? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299 How much RAM do I need what's good and cheap? Any recommendations on a video card to play WOW? I'd like to stay around 150 bucks. What's a good cheap secondary HD 360-500 GB should be fine. Do I need to upgrade my Power Supply? What can still be used and what should I start looking for. Can someone make me a decent build for around 600 bucks by salvaging as much as I can? Most important parts are MLB, Video Card, Processor and RAM. I can get by with my 74GB HD for right now, optical drives, and case probably. |

MB: Asus P5Q
CPU: E8500 Video Card: 4850 Ram: Corsair 2x2gb ddr2-800 PSU: Corsair 550 You can reuse the hard drive and cd drive. They are pretty cheap now a days though for new ones. Once you total the above up, you can let us know if you want to spend a few bucks more, or less.

There's literally like 50 different kinds of pq5 boards. Which one are you referring to? Same with the 4850 video card. I don't understand all the different kinds...saphire, hmi, you name it!
This is on a one day special in my 150 ballpark with rebates. What's everyone think of this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102759 I've used 3 different PSU Calculator's with my potential build and everything indicates my 500W Antec SmartPower PSU is more then enough. All my calculations are coming out around 360W. Last edited by geissap; 09-11-2008 at 05:38 AM. |

P5Q: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131295
4850: This one should be good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161235 And you might want to consider, this new 4670 that came out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102792 It should provide decent performance. Not sure how demanding wow is though. Do you have a model number for your current power supply? |

You don't need a whole lot of video card (actually you barely need anything) to play WOW even on the highest setting. I used to have an old 9800XT card that would play that on high.
