Want to upgrade

Right now I have a computer based around a 3GHz Pentium D, 2GB DDR2 667 RAM, and a Asus P5LD2 Deluxe motherboard. The main reason I am wanting to upgrade is because this thing runs so hot and loud, I am done with it. I can hear the fans running from downstairs and this PC is in a bedroom upstairs. I can not leave it on during the day in the summer because it will raise the room temp an easy 5-10 degrees. The only benefit I get from this problem is I will tun it on in the middle of the night in winter and use it as a space heater.

Last xmas I built my dad a PC. I am so impressed at how cool and quiet it is I was just going to buy the same CPU, RAM, and Mobo he has, but some components are no longer available on newegg. I also figure there may be some newer and only slightly more expensive components out now since it has been almost 10 months.

He has the Intel E6750 CPU. The motherboard is the Asus P5K-VM, and the Ram is Corsair XMS2 2GB.

Newegg still has the ram as only 28 dollars, but the CPU is still $185, just $10 less than what I paid 10 months ago!! The mobo is not available. I have a graphics card I am going to use and don't need integrated video. I know the P5K-VM does, I was just going to disable it.

I have 2 SATA hard drive (1 OS, 1 Storage)
2 SATA DVD-RW(Roms)
1 IDE DVD-RW
I want firewire, ethernet, and audio integrated too.

What do you suggest. I want to stick with the E6750 or an equivalent in terms of cool temps and power and I want to stay with an Asus board.

Thanks,
Brian

MB: If you don't want onboard video, Asus P5Q
CPU: E8400
Ram: The corsair you picked is good.

What case are you using? Does it have good airflow?

My computer heats up my room too.

I am using the sonata II case with supplied PSU. Is the E8400 going to run just as cool and quiet as the E6750? Remember, that is my main reason for upgrading.

It should run cooler since it requires less voltage.

Why is the Conroe E6750 $185, when the Wolfdale E8200 is only $165 and is the same 2.66 MHz, but is a newer model and has more L2 cache?

Probably has to do with what the original purchase price was when the retailer bought it.

1. I have decided to go with either the Intel E8200 (2.66 GHz) or the E8400 (3.00 GHz). They are basically the same price, $5 difference. The only reason I would go with the 2.66 over the 3.00 is because i don't know how much more heat the 3 GHz will give off. What do you guys think?

2. Would this be the correct RAM for either choice of CPU above? Is this the correct Cas Latency (5) and voltage (1.9V)? On my dads build I talk about above, I bought Cas Latency 4 and I think it was user GLC told me to return it and get Cas Latency 5 for best stability. What about DDR3 vs DDR2?

3. For the motherboard, should I go with a P35 Asus P5K or a P45 Asus P5Q. The older P5K's seems like a good price. Are there any big advantages to going with the new P45? Or should I be going with something completely different?

I don't really think the heat difference between the e8200 and the e8400 will be any.

That ram you linked to is good.

DDR3 is overpriced, and offers no real benefit right now unless you're doing some extreme overclocking and benchmarking.

Again, you can't go wrong with either the p5k, or the p5q. I have two builds with a p5k or it's variant. A lot of people are now using the p5q. It has a newer chipset. It offers raid, and thus I think it will operate in achi mode. It supports more memory, and also has a pci-e 2 slot.

If all you are worried about is heat, I would recommend getting an aftermarket heatsink such as the artic cooling freezer 7 pro, it works great for Pentium Ds and is really quiet. Your case should be quiet enough from my experience with the Antec Sonata, all you need is a replacement for the stock Intel fan which isn't very efficient and can sometimes sound like a vacuum cleaner. I currently have a Pentium D @ 3.2GHz in my backup rig with an ACF7Pro and it's really quiet/cool, load temps are only a few degrees higher than room temperature. Here is a link to the aftermarket heatsink: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186134

I can see how a better heatsink/fan can better and more efficiently pull the heat away requiring the fan to spin slow and quiet things down, but its still going to produce the exact same amount of heat, won't it?

Doesn't seem to me like that is what happens when the fan is upgraded, I've noticed a reduced amount of heat in my room after I upgraded the fan. Having a better heatsink prevents the processor from getting as hot as before, so even if the air is still being circulated around, it won't be as hot as before.

Can someone please confirm these compoents are compatable. I am ready to click the button to submit the order. I will be using the Sonata II case with the 450 watt PSU that is included with it. I hope this runs as quiet and cool as my dads (E6750, Asus P5K-VM, Corsair XMS2 2GB)
