Error with new build

Hi,

These are the specs of the new build:

1. CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane 2.8GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core black edition Processor

2. Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-EM AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

3. RAM: OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

6. Graphics Card: eVGA Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16

4. CPU Cooler: Rosewill RCX-Z1 Long life ball bearing for over 45,000/hrs CPU Cooler

5. Case/PSU: Antec Sonata III 500 Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply

The graphics card is from an older machine. I don't play too many games, so I thought it would be enough and the motherboard has onboard graphics.

I tried the procedure listed on this page: PROBLEMS with a NEW BUILD? Try This!!

I did everything as listed. When I used the screw driver to short the power switch connector on the motherboard, the power light on the motherboard turned on, the CPU fan turned on, the fan on the 6600GT GPU turned on, but nothing was displayed on the monitor connected to the GPU. I also tried using just the onboard graphics and had the same result. That page says that the system should boot up when the power switch connector is shorted and that something should be displayed on the monitor, but I don't see that happening. I'm not sure how to proceed. I would welcome any advice.

Thanks.

Did you plug in both the 24 pin and 4 pin power cables into the mother board?

And definately try just the onboard video for now.

Yeah, I plugged in those power cables. Should I try going ahead with the build, adding the optical drives, HDD, etc. and see if it works or should I work with what I have now till I can get a display on the monitor?

Good news. The problem turned out to be with the RAM. I got a stick from someone, tried it, and saw a display.

This is an unrelated issue, but for some reason, the CPU heatsink/fan (Rosewill RCX-Z) keeps moving around on the surface of the CPU even after the installation. I attached the clips on the cooler to the retention module and unlike other heatsinks, this one doesn't seem to have a retention bracket lock aside from the two clips on the opposite sides of the cooler. I thought that the thermal compound on the bottom of the heatsink would dry soon after it was placed on the CPU, but this one still seems somewhat fluid (it comes pre-applied) even after 5 or 6 hours. Will it dry out on its own?
