Is my build fried?

Ok. I want to know whether or not my build is fried.

source of problem (i think):
When moving stuff around, my crappy harddrive broke. The plastic backing to the 6 metal sata connectors got stuck inside my sata cable, rendering the connection useless. It's possible that i shorted out the SATA connection while trying to fit it back together.

The system was powered off but not unplugged when the HDD broke.

the problem:
when starting the computer (with the HDD completely detatched), I get no bios, no signal on the monitor, my CD Drive doesn't turn on

things that work:
CPU Fan
GPU Fan (can't tell if the GPU works obviously)
Case Fans
HDD turned on

specs:
Biostar TA780G Motherboard
9800gt EVGA
AMD 2.8 Brisbane Black Edition (stock settings)
Arctic Freezer Pro 7
NZXT Apollo
Antec Basiq 500w PSU
Old CD Drive
Crucial 2gigs (2x1) Memory
Seagate 500gb 32mb cache 3.0g/s SATA Hard Drive

What do i do next?

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that, to assemble it outside of the case. It'll have to wait for tomorrow.

Screaching beep

Ok well...
I took everything out just like the thread suggested. all that is connected is one RAM my CPU heatsink, my CPU, and my GPU. All the power supply things are connected too.

I tried without, connecting monitor straight to mobo: CPU fan on, nothing
I tried again resetting my CMOS again: cpu fan on, nothing
I connected my GPU and connected the monitor to that: CPU fan on, SCREACHING BEEP starts, immediately turned off power. The CPU fan had started.
Again: same thing

I'm pretty convinced that it's fried now, my friend said the same thing happened to him once when his PSU surged. This beep was solid with no stops. I have no experience with beep codes, but with my insignificant knowledge i doubt it's a beep code.

Is there any hope?

I would just use the mb, cpu with heatsink, and ram. All that and the power supply. You already reset the cmos, so onboard video should work.

If that doesn't post, which you said it didn't, then did you try the other stick of ram? Did you try a different slot?

If still no post, then one of those components is bad.

I would try a different power supply first.

After that, motherboard.

A solid screeching beep could indicate incompatible RAM or the RAM went belly up. What speed RAM are you using? List all the specifics (speed, CAS latency, etc...)

First, thanks for all of your help. I appreciate it! .
I took the cmos battery out for a minute and also moved a header thingy to reset it according to my mobo manual. (before all of this), so i think that should reset it. I tried both sticks of RAM in all slots, nothing. Without my GPU i don't get a beep, does that mean my GPU is broken?

I was about to try an old psu from an old computer but the mobo power is only 20 pins, not 24 like i need. I guess i'll try some different monitors too, before i buy parts that may be replacing ones that work fine already.

update: no luck.

@cricket: I doubt this is the problem because i had the build running for a week before my HDD broke. Once that broke i couldn't ever get it to start up. It might be possible that the ram got burnt out.

update: I will try to get a refund on my motherboard from newegg since it hasn't been a month yet, but i don't know if i can because i don't have the shipping supplies it came with. It conveniently broke a week after working perfectly, so i threw everything away.

Check the underside of the motherboard for burnt or fried ciruit traces.

You will get a constant screech if you don't connect a power cable to a video card that requires one.

Oh WOW, i hope that is the problem! I'm not at home now, but I'll try again as soon as i get home. If that is the problem though, why didn't the onboard work?

Because the card was installed and functioning, but it isn't getting enough power so it halts the system.

I was really hoping that this would solve the problem, but, when i plugged it in correctly, It still didn't post. However the loud beep stopped and my fan on my GPU turned on.

thanks for the help. I think i'll start testing my parts on a different person's computer

Is the motherboard in or out of the case right now? It should be out for troubleshooting.
