New Build with questions.
So, I am building a new PC. It will be used for some gaming, web surfing and so on. I was wondering if the Q6600 is outdated or will it still be good for the next few years? Should I wait a couple of months for prices to go down? Also, how is this motherboard? Anything I should change? Are all the parts compatible? Any recommendations or suggestions are welcomed.

Looks like a good list.
I'd go with the Asus P5Q boards. No reason to buy an SLI board when one card makes more sense anyways. The Quad is a fine CPU still. However, most people here will recommend going with the E8500. Dual Cores have the edge in games right now, and quads are really only necessary for heavy multitasking. I'd swap for CAS5 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184 And lastly, go with a burner that comes with software.

So here is the revised build using the suggestions of ALARON.
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021 MoBo: ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299 Video Card: EVGA 512-P3-N873-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130376 PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 Memory: CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3750330AS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148298 DVD Burner: LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model iHAS220-08 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106265 OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit English 1pk for System Builders DSP OEI DVD - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116485 I'm still trying to figure out whether to get the Duo Core E8500 over the Q6600. Any input on this? Also, will that video card be good for the next few years for the newer games that haven't come out yet like Starcraft 2, etc. Also, should I opt for 64 bit version of Vista? I want to emphasize what was said above, that quads are ONLY necessary for a LOT of multitasking.

Great list.
For a gaming machine, the E8500 is my CPU of choice right now. The Q6600 is plenty capable but you'll get more bang for the buck with the dual core. Video card longevity is hard to predict, but it should be fine for the foreseeable future at least. 64bit Vista is up to you. Keep in mind that the 32bit version will report about 3GB of RAM when 4GB is installed. |
