need help with loading os

I am building a pc for a friend and everything seems to be plugged in right ( because everything starts up). I checked the temps in the BIOS and they’re at about 36c. Made sure to boot to cd drive first then hard drive. The problem is when I put the xp cd in it will start to load. Then goes to the eula. Then as it goes to start loading the os, it stops and says setup cannot find a previous version of windows on this computer. To continue, setup needs to verify that you qualify for this up grade. Please insert cd, which gives me some choices. One is windows xp home edition (full version) etc, but the disc I have says up windows xp upgrade. When I press enter to continue it will just keep coming back to this window, says setup cannot find a previous version of windows on this computer. To continue, setup needs to verify that you qualify for this up grade. Is the problem with the install of this os that it’s an up grade disc and not s full version disc?
Thanks for any help.

An upgrade disc REQUIRES you to have a previous version of Windows installed.

You need to have a full version of Windows installed for that upgrade to upgrade.
