First Build - A few Q's before I buy it all...
So now my laptop is dying and i want to upgrade to a desktop that can handle lots of graphic work such as CAD, video editing, photoshop. Should be nice and quick and able to cope with multitasking in a big way.
Here's my thoughts so far... Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz 6M Cache S775 1333MHZ http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 (already bought) -plan to overclock to 3.6 Thermalright TRUE Black 120 CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=HS-056-TR Sapphire Technology Radeon HD 4850 512MB PCIE http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 Asus P5Q http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 OR Asus P5Q Pro http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 - I read about problems with the USB chip on these but is that just a minority of cases? Is the Pro version worth the extra fiver? OCZ Technology 2X2GBKIT REAPER 240PIN PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHZ http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 -is this compatible with the Motherboard? Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb 32mb cache http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 Already Bought Cooler Master Cm-690 Case http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 Already Bought Corsair HX 620W power supply http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...avigationKey=0 Asus DRW-20B1ST 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Rewriter (Black) - OEM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...ack)%20-%20OEM Already Bought 6X Yate Loon D12SM-12 1650RPM 120mm Fan http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608504 Zalman MFC1 Plus 6 Channel Multi Fan Controller - Black http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=607812 - Do i really need a fan controller? Logitech UltraX Premium Keyboard - Keyboard - USB - UK - OEM http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Ult...416281&sr=1-13 -Or can anyone recommend me a nice keyboard around £10-15 ? So altogether comes out around £650. Is everything I have listed compatible and should it all fit together and work out of the box? I already have a 22" monitor which will do just fine. What do you guys recommend for the Operating System these days. (i'm still a little hesitant about Vista) Cheers for any help you can give me. Last edited by lllama; 10-19-2008 at 02:58 PM. |

Be aware that using an aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan voids the CPU warranty.
You will need a 64 Bit OS (Vista) to use the 4GB of RAM. I would go with one graphics card. |

I would just stick with the retail-boxed heatsink/fan that comes along with your processor.

Thanks for replies...
but which of the three graphic cards I listed would you recommend? I am aware that the heatsink would void my warranty so maybe I'll try with the stock cooler to begin with. But is everything else compatible with each other? |

Either one of the 512 video cards wil do you fine. Since most of the stuff you want to do is CPU intensive, getting the 1g video card is a bit of a waste of money.
As for OCing, my feeling is if the PC is used for crunching data instead of gaming, would run the system at stock speeds for the stability. Looks like you did your research, looks like a good system. If you already have the CAD/photoediting software, match the OS to what the software is compatable with.
