New Build: Lots of problems

I got an XFX 780i mobo and Intel Q6600 2.4ghz processor on a 550w corsair psu with an nvidia 8800 gpu. and 3gb of ram

Right now its taking hours to install Vista Ultimate 64, and I notice it takes a particularly long time at the "expanding files" part of the installation, but the whole process up until that had taken about and hour and change.

Right now I'm running memtest, and I tried to run Western Digital's Lifeguard tools to diagnose my HDD but its giving me a "no drivers detected" error and won't let me boot to the diagnostic disc.

Any suggestions from where to go now?

Could be aa HDD issue. Have you tried another SATA cable?

Do you have another HDD you can swap in with to eliminate the other components as faulty? Or try swapping the suspect HDD into and known working system to test it out.

Try only running the pc with the bare essentials. One stick of memory, processor, processor heatsink/fan, video card, power supply, motherboard, HDD.

I had slapped this HD into an older system and managed to install windows on it in about 30-45 minutes, maybe a little longer. I consider that decent: here's whats wierd though.

Installing windows on my new system takes hours! Now that memtest I ran has been running for 3 and a half hour and is only on Test#3 and at 2% of the first pass. I just keep getting the feeling that something is not working on my mother board. I'm gonna go stop that memtest and swap out some more SATA cords later tonight.

Just keep running the memtest and see if there is any faulty memory installed.

When you hooked up the hdd to the other system... did you try running hdd diagnostic on it?

Did you format the drive with XP or the WD tools?

I formatted it with Killdisk writing zeros to drive. I did not run a HDD diagnostic on the drive when I had it in the other setup.

Do you have any good RAM that is compatible with your board? If you do, install it and run memtest again.

Is your suspect RAM part of a kit? If it is, it doesn't matter which one is faulty. The entire kit will need to be returned to get a refund or credit.
