Need reccomendations
My wife's computer has died. All indications are the motherboard is gone. The machine is old and it's time I built her a custom machine that fits her needs. I'll list the primary conditions and needs.
She can, and will leave her computer on for days. No gaming. Mostly email and word processing, with the email consisting of many pictures, which she saves from computer to computer. Even with this, the current 80 gig drive is fairly empty. No networking. Broadband is usb wireless. I have cases running out the wazoo, thanks to the computers damaged at work by hurricane Ike. I'm suspicious of a fairly new power supply that wasn't submerged in water, but it was in a file server that had six inches of water in the bottom of the case. I have two western digital ide 80gig hardrives. One is new and the other has checked as good by WD tests. The new one will be used as the master drive; I might place the other drive in the machine. The dvd and floppy drive are new. I don't see any additions required to the computer in the future. I have an XP home disk. I'm looking for the least expensive components without sacrificing dependability. I'm thinking I'll need a motherboard, probably a power supply, a processor with higher end cooling, memory and maybe a few new cables, although I'm far from being an expert on what I'll need. Truthfully, I could probably spend hours researching different combinations, but I don't have the time and I realize how I'd still be way behind the curve compared to those here that have the years of knowledge and experience. You might consider something like this for $48.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128333 Has onboard video and sound, and network card. You just add an AMD CPU and memory- which for word processing and email can be fairly low end- You can get an AMD x2 for less that $75. |

Intel or AMD? What is your budget?

First, thanks for the repllies.
I've had good luck with AMD and Intell, so I'm not particular. I'd like to keep costs to less than $500, if possible. |

Here is what Tomshardware recommends for the $500 system (your cost will be less because you already have some of the components).

Yep, I agree with the Tomshardware list, but I'd probably get an Intel E5200 instead of the E2180.

The following parts list will allow you to build a relatively fast and reliable computer using your old case, hard drive(s), optical drive, floppy drive and XP disc. The part in the parts list has all the cables you will need and has a high quality heatsink. The motherboard in the parts list is one of the only ones which have two IDE ports which will be necessary if you intend on running both hard drives and the optical drive, if you want to run only one hard drive, then you can use the Gigabyte motherboard recommended in the previous post instead of the Asus one in the parts list and take out the graphics card from the list of parts as well since it will save you money and not affect performance much. Here is the parts list:

Don't need the aftermarket heatsink/fan since the retail boxed processor you have listed already has a good heatsink/fan.
