definitely get a dual core and not a quad core. All games now don't use the other 2 cores, some are still made for single cores! You won't see any games made for quad core until a few years from now and you should still be able to use a dual for those.
I use a 2.8 amd one, it's great. a quad core at 2.5 isn't for gaming, only for running 20 copies of internet explorer i guess. if you're going to get a gtx260, then you'll need a bigger monitor. There's no point because 19" resolution will max everything. If you want to use the gtx260 to it's full potential, you're gonna need a bigger monitor like a 22" wide or 24" (or bigger i guess) for your OS, if you have the option, get sp2. it's better and has fewer problems and is cheaper. finally, you don't really need such a high wattage PSU, a 500-600 watt one would be fine. the main issue here is the quality, so if you get one that is a solid unit, then you won't have to worry about it too much. That is, unless you want more than one gtx260. good luck! |

You can save money by dropping down to a E8500.
I would also get cas 5 ram instead of cas 4. Look at corsair. They have a nice rebate right now. I would get keyboard and mouse from a store instead, this way you can actually get a feel for what you like. Can drop down to this psu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 and save money as well. EDIT: Changes look good.

19" and 22" monitors have the same resolution. I strongly suggest going for a 24".
to save costs: Go with a corsair xms2 2 x 2gb, you can get it for 49.99 rebate on newegg And you can go down to an e8400 as well... the only difference is the .5 multi. Look for an E0 revision chip, and you can OC all you want. |

shadowpr, would you recommend the PSU you linked over the one in my updated configuration? It's about $50 less, so that would help him a little from a sheer cost standpoint.
I'm looking at the Corsair ram right now. This is the one I am thinking about using in place of the mushkin: CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory I think the suggestion you have about the keyboard and mouse is probably a good idea. I just called my friend and he agrees. ![]() [EDIT: Arbiter, I'm not sure he has enough desk space to accommodate a 24" monitor. He wanted a 19", but I doubt he will gripe about getting a few extra inches. Also, he isn't technologically savvy enough to mess with overclocking. And, as far as I'm concerned, anything that may void a warranty is too dangerous for him.] [EDIT #2: On second thought, I think I am going to go with this monitor: Acer P243WAid Black-Silver 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor with HDCP Support 400 cd/m2 3000:1 ACM The price is down to roughly $1540. Hope he can fit that monitor on his desk. I suppose he could also use it as a display for his Xbox 360.] Last edited by wwkennedy; 10-29-2008 at 10:29 PM. |

Good monitor choice!
As for overclocking, its not for everyone. With that build it is helpful to know it can though, and whether you are running a stock 8400 or 8500, it wont make a difference in gaming. Especially with that card. |

that is 32 bit OS. It will use 4gb, but no recognize it, and not use it full potential. It is something like 2gb can be used by the OS, and the rest in applications.
here is XP x64 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116378 I run XP64bit, driver are an issue at times, but is it fast and I have never BSOD |

I found that 64-bit version right after posting my previous build. The only thing that is problematic with that situation is that there are only $9 left for my friend to spend on mouse/keyboard.
