New motherboard and processor
Hello,
I need to replace a motherboard and a processor for my desktop computer. The computer is mostly used for internet use and emails. Maybe some game play. This is what I had before: Processor ( [939-pin] AMD® Athlon-64 X2 4200+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology ) Motherboard ( Gigabyte GA-K8NF9 nVidia nForce4 Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 PCI-E Motherboard ) Let me know what you guys recommend for a good motherboard and processor. Thanks! |

A good replacement for your processor/motherboard with similar function and power usage would be an AM2 motherboard, with an AMD dual core, and 2GB of DDR2 ram (since your motherboard that you currently have supports DDR1 and most new motherboards support either DDR2, DDR3 or both, but not DDR1.
Here is a parts list from newegg: ASUS M2N-SLI AM2 NVIDIA nForce 560 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131246 $86.99 mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996527 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146118 $39.99 AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor Model ADA6000CZBOX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103233 $92.00 Subtotal: $218.98

I would prefer Intel and price range, something reasonable to replace these two components.

Intel CPUs can provide you with more power in gaming and encoding apps, but for internet use and email, AMD processors provide better performance for the dollar at the lower price ranges. An Athlon 64 X2 @ 3.0GHz with double the cache of your previous processor and DDR2 ram (DDR2 Ram is a good amount faster than DDR1 for the processor since the processor has a built in high speed memory controller which takes advantage of the faster DDR2 ram).
If you are still interested in getting an Intel processor, this parts list should provide you with a good boost in performance compared to the AMD alternative in gaming and encoding apps, but won't really affect email or internet use; both options will be a great replacement to your current setup: mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996527 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146118 $39.99 ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299 $119.99 Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037 $169.99 Subtotal: $329.97 |
