Unhappy Build Problems

Some of you may remember, I posted here looking for advice on a new build several months ago. Everything went together seemingly without a hitch, but after installing my chosen OS at the time (64-bit XP), I encountered problems with installation. Every time I tried installing crysis, I encountered a corrupt file message "Sound1.cab is corrupt and cannot be installed/extracted" or something to that effect. I know that the disk isn't the issue because it installs fine on several other computers (roommate's laptop and my laptop). Further, the problem was occurring for every other game I tried to install.

Figuring that the OS was to blame, I purchased Vista Ultimate 32-bit (on the cheap through school) and tried reformatting and reinstalling with that. I had the exact same problems as I did with 64 XP. At this point, I'd already tried updating all my drivers, testing my dvd-rom to see if it was the problem (I had a usb external DVD rom tht I used), ran memtest and other hard drive diagnostics. Nothing turned up from any of these tests. Now truly confused, I borrowed a copy of 32-bit XP from a friend and tried installing that. The problem persisted. My roommate was kind enough to work with Microsoft online support (wherein they control the computer via internet in an attempt to fix the error.) They concluded, after several sessions of several hours each, that the software wasn't causing problems and that it was a hardware problem. I'm thus here trying to understand what's going on and attempting to, at long last, fix this problem.

Other potentially relevant information:
- Able to install Crysis and have it work with XP 64 installed by installing it on a portable hard-drive through another computer (IE my laptop) and then transferring it to the other computer. There were some problems with getting it to load but we were able to get it to run in this manner.
- Other games encounter nearly identical problems on installation or they have critical errors on run-time immediately after loading (crash to desktop)
- MemTest and Seatools were used for each OS install and came up without error every time.

Parts used are:

Mobo:
Asus P5Q Pro

Ram:
2x2gb Corsair XMS DDR2-800 Ram

HDD:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb

DVD-ROM:
LITE-ON Sata DVD-ROM

Case:
Antec Nine Hundred

Video Card:
Radeon HD 4870X2

CPU:
Intel 8400 Wolfdale

PSU:
PC Power & Cooling PSU

Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. I haven't been able to motivate myself to fight this anymore until recently because of my major. Thanks again for your time.

Is that one disc the only thing that you have a problem with?

No. I've had problems with: Dawn of War, World of Warcraft, Civ 4, and another half dozen games I tried on it. I've also tried downloading demos of games and those have the same problem. Every time it tells me that it cannot install because of a corrupt file and/or extraction. (And it's the same across all 3 OS's.) I do know that all of the disks work on other computers.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Do have the newest video card drivers installed? How about the newest Windows updates and drivers for all of the other components?

Yes to both questions. I updated drivers for all my components and updated as much as the system would allow (IE I had problems with a few installations similar to what I experienced with the games and other programs I was failing to install.)

Thanks.
