I've never heard that one, which doesn't mean it won't work, but usually when a PS3 is part of a home entertainment system it's getting media streamed to it since the hard drive size is, comparatively, small.
The size limit is due to the fact that it uses notebook size sata hard drives here's how to go about upgrading to something larger : http://www.cnet.com.au/games/ps3/0,2...9282375,00.htm Currently the largest laptop hard drives at newegg are 500 GB : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...009&name=500GB It's something of a gamble but you're right in thinking that it's a potential HTPC.

ya I was thinking of upgrading the drive to 500gb, but I'm not sure if it would be more benificial to run a htpc seperate. I want to control everything through my harmony one remote, if I cant do that with a oc and will have to pull out a keyboard id rather do it with the ps3

That PS3 is going to have a few other limits though, depending on how much data you need stored and backed up as well as whether or not you want DVR ability.

I bought a program called TwonkyVision... it resides on your computer and will stream your MP3's, Videos and pictures all to your PS3 without loading your computer down really hard.

It's super easy to set up... essentially install the program and answer the questions of what do you want to share and it does the rest. Go to your PS3 and do a search for a media server and it picks it up. I'm running a wireless network and haven't had any problems with the streaming.

Its pretty straight forward. Download the trial and install. Run the program and it configures through your web browser. Go through the basic set up.
Select your language. Name your media server so you can identify it on the network. My computer is named HAL9000, so I called mine HAL9000_media. Select how you want your system to display the media. I set mine up "iPod like"... it's easy to change afterwards, just go back into the configuration. After that screen is done, save the info and then select 'Sharing" Add the directory or directories of the media that you want to share on your computer and what type of media it is. You can specify to share music only, videos only, pictures only, all media. Set the scan time. I left mine at -1. There is a pretty straight forward explanation on the page what it does. Save changes then click on "Client Security" You can have the system add clients automaticallly, or specify the IP address of each machine allowed access. If you are specifying, allow other computers access by setting the IP and selecting generic media receiver. The PS3 is specifically listed, enter the PS3 IP and select PS3. Save changes, restart server if necessary. That's all there really is to it. Once you're up and running, you can play with the advanced setup for any tweaking that you would like to do. |
