I'm new and building my first PC, yes I've done research.
Hi my name's Kyle and I'm new here. I simply wanted a forum that would help me build a PC and not tell me to go buy a Dell... so here goes.
So I've always told my parents that I would build them a computer to replace their extremely old PC (that originally came with windows 98), and they finally called me out on it. Not that I care I'm extremely excited to do it. So it's going to be a budget PC, which doesn't matter because all they do on the computer is check e-mail and go online, and my mom uses Quickbooks I believe. Anyway, here's what I have so far. I think I still need a video card, but I have no idea which one cause the Mobo says it has a PCI express x4 slot. I see video cards for PCI express, but I don't know if any will work with that slot... (Yeah as I said first time builder, I have done a ton of research though) You guys are welcome to suggest different/better parts in the same price range, or slightly higher/lower if your part is much better. The computer will be running XP, as I really don't want to mess with Vista. No I'm not a vista hater but I don't want to have to deal with ANYTHING, as I'm never home. Anyway here's the list of parts.. ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 LGA 775 VIA PT880 Pro/PT880 Ultra ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E2180 - Retail LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model DH-20A4P-04 - OEM I'm not sure if I want to go SATA or IDE here, convince me one way or the other. CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory Model VS2GBKIT667D2 - Retail Quick question... The Mobo says it supports 2 Gigs of DDR and 2 Gigs of DDR2, XP only supports 2 Gigs right? Does that mean it supports 4 gigs total or is it 2 Gigs DDR OR 2 Gigs DDR2. Just a bit confused... Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM LOGISYS Computer PS575XBK 575W ATX12V SLI Ready Power Supply - Retail Rosewill R6426-P BK ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail TIA |

That's good advice from the other forum. Intel or Asus motherboards are good & OCZ PSU's are good.
For more info on PSU's you can look at this list. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 |

I would get the asus p5kpl-cm motherboard.
Just get those 2x1gb. They will work perfect with your setup. I would get a sata dvd drive. It make cable management easier, and you don't have to worry about jumpers. I like that ocz power supply as well. Look at a seagate hard drive. They have 5 year warrenties. But either way, you can't go wrong. Don't forget mouse, keyboard.

Thanks for the replies guys. About the SATA DVD drive, I've heard that XP installer has trouble recognizing SATA drives. Is that true? Would I be find anyway? I actually prefer SATA (I hate IDE cables). Thanks again.
