CPU reads 100 degrees celcius

This is my first build and I have it working. I go into BIOS to find the CPU running at 100 C, but it says the CPU fan is at 1698 RPM. Is this normal?

No that is definitely not normal. Are you sure you installed the HSF properly with thermal paste? Please provide detailed system specs...

Something is definitely wrong... 100'F would be fine, but100'C is at least double, up to triple what it should be.

Are you sure it's in Celsius? Your computer should have shutdown before reaching that temp.

100c is alot mine stay's around 40c at idle and 50c at load which i gather from post's i have read is about average.

check and make sure your bios is the newest version and you should reseat the heatsink maybe you don't have it on good sometime's it feel's like you have the heatsink on right but it really isn't seated properly.download core temp and see what the temp's read when you run it.

Did you make sure the push pins, which are a pain, are completely latched down?

I'm running an Intel Quad 2.83Ghz and ASUS probe is giving me the same readings as going into the BIOS directly... Idling at a chilly 25'C. No extra thermal paste, just the pre-applied stuff on the stock heat sink. I'm just torture testing now with Prime95.. looks like I've peaked the temp at 48'C.

Yes, you're correct: it should already have a "pad" on it; no need to add anything. However, if you remove it, then you'll have to clean it properly and then apply some thermal "grease" (a.k.a. paste).

64 is still too high. You need to remove the motherboard in order to properly reinstall a 775 hsf. Turn the retention tabs in the direction of the arrows to remove them. Then turn them back AGAINST the arrows before you reinsert the pins into the motherboard. Support the motherboard with one hand underneath while you push down on each pin until they click. Then examine the pins from underneath the mobo and make sure each is fully inserted and locked.
