Upgrades
Hey guys, I am an avid gamer with a low budget Heh...
Currently my rig sits at this Asus M2N-E 2GB Corsair VSelect 667 160 Seagate SATA HD 7600GT evga 256 FSP 450 W PSU Want to possibly upgrade... 350 dollar budget. Was planning on 1 EVGA 512-P3-N980-AR GeForce 9800 GT Hybrid Power 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail 1 CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply 1 AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADO5000DOBOX 1 G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ Think this should take me for a year or so? Planning on playing lots of SC2 (Which I am sure will completely exceed it's requirements). But forg ames like Fallout 3, and such... this should suffice? |

I wouldn't bother doing a ram upgrade unless you are using vista, 2GB for XP is more than enough. I would use the money it would cost you to upgrade the ram and increase your budget for the video card so you can get something like the 9800GTX+ or HD4850.

Best bang for the buck as far as processor goes is the 6000, which will game quite nicely and is only 89 bucks right now on the egg. Here is the link to the newest model...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103233 with the 2 x 1mb cache you wlll notice quite a nice boost in speed over your current processor. You won't even need a bios update. Just plug in and go. You also might be able to get away with your current PSU since its a quality unit depending on the Video card you select. But i will let someone else comment on that... Also i agree with the ram, leave it and put more money towards the processor and Video card... Last edited by joshrogoff; 11-10-2008 at 04:13 PM. |

For the record.... I am running Vista Home Premium.
Would it be possible to use my FSP 450 W PSU with a 9800GTX+ and an X2 6000+. It has dual 12v rails.. I believe at 18amps a piece. Last edited by bggsm03; 11-11-2008 at 04:10 AM. |

Requirements Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amp Amps.) more would be better though and give you headroom plus power for future upgrades

Am a wee bit worried about the 9800GTX+ fitting into my case though. I have a Raidmax Smilodon case. M2N-E motherboard as well. I would go for the 4850 beings that it is pretty close in performance, just runs hot. Would that be alright though, I mean if that is it's native temp. What is Sapphire's warranty?

go with this 4850 it has good cooling.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161244 and i think that would be a good choice the 4850 is a great card with a nice price/performance ratio. as far as sapphire's warranty here it is: Sapphire VGA products carry a 2 year warranty with all enquires carried out through your initial place of purchase. This can only be carried out by the original purchaser Please contact your Dealer/Reseller for Warranty / RMA service. They will require proof of purchase which includes the original invoice/documentation. |

I think I have settled on this.
Sapphire HD4850 2x2 G.Skill DDR2 800 Athlon X2 6000+ Corsair 550W PSU I didnt see much of a performance difference between the 4850 and the GTX+. Price was about 30 dollar difference and I think the 4850 is mroe forgiving on space, and is single slot. Better chance of fitting my case. Does this sound reasonable? |
