Putting life in an old box
Hey everyone,
Haven't posted in some time, but I've been lurking in the background reading and such. A buddy of mine came across some PC parts in his attic and welcomed me to them before he gave them a toss. Naturally I took the whole dang box as I can't bare to throw out such things. Among the tangled IDE cables and PCI cards was a wrapped up Asus A8V-X VIA K8T800 Pro motherboard, socket 939. Heat sink and fan still attached, I was anxious to see if there may be a processor underneath. Sure enough, an Athlon 64 3200+ stared me in the face. After initial excitement, it gave me an idea.... My aging P4 system (in my sig) seems to be getting slower by the month, lots of hang ups and frequent restarts. I had trouble with power getting to the motherboard in the past but it seems like a non issue now. Anyway, I also have a Shuttle PC in my bedroom sort of acting like a HTPC equipped with an AMD Athlon 3800+ X2 processor, socket 939. My plan was to remove the P4P800 motherboard from my current/sig PC and replace it with the A8V-X. Then take the dual core processor out of my Shuttle and install there. Lastly, take the 3200+ and install in the Shuttle. What do you think? A little time consuming, but I enjoy that. Would everything in my sig PC adapt to the A8V-X without hassle? Would I also be required to reload XP? It seemed to good to be true really. I was waiting and waiting to do a complete rebuild with a Core 2 something-or-other, but a free motherboard and CPU fit my current budget if you know what I mean. Sorry for the long post, any help or advice would be appreciated. Andy

Does your friend happen to remember if the mobo/cpu worked before stashing it away?
You might consider building it into a third pc to avoid having a mobo/cpu sitting around collecting dust.

More than likely you will need to re-install windows. I have never been able to get a windows repair to work going from Intel to AMD platform.
