Question Updating a '04 custom PC will this work? Multitasking?

Hello everyone,

I have a 2004 custom built PC that I have decided to upgrade do to my multitasking needs.

The current setup is as follows:

Win XP Pro SP2
Antec true power 550W power supply
DUAL Intel Xeon 1.60GHz CPU =3.20GHz
3 GB RAM
Adaptec 1210SA Serial ATA RAID
Adaptec RAID 0 SCSI 465GB Disk Drive
= (250GB western digital 2500JD X 2 )
WD 740GD 74 SATA 10K Raptor 70GB (I have Windows installed on here)
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 256mb
ASUS Quietrack CRW-5232AS Cd-RW
PLEXTOR PX-712A DVD-RW
Creative Audigy 2 Zs Platinum
Thermaltake TSunami Dream ATX tower

What I would like to do is swap out the MoBo, CPU, ram and graphics card to make it a stable multitasking rig with the capability to edit video using Sony Vegas 8, I did some research and this is what I came up with:

Swap the MoBo for a:
Asus P5Q-E Green Motherboard - Intel P45, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, S/PDIF, Dual Gigabit LAN, Firewire, USB 2.0, eSATA, RAID
Here

Swap the CPU out for a:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor HH80562PH0568M - 2.40GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Kentsfield, Quad-Core, OEM, Socket 775, Processor
Here

Heat sink: ZEROtherm / CF900 / Socket 775 / Copper Base / Heatpipes / CPU Cooler Here
Will that keep the CPU cool ro do I need something else if so please recommend.

And the graphics card for:
Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 - 1024MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready, Dual DVI, HDTV, HDMI Support, Video Card
Here

Add some RAM:
OCZ Dual Channel Platinum 4096MB PC8500 DDR2 1066MHz Memory (2 x 2048MB)
Here

Then overclock the CPU to 3.6GHz and install Vista ultimate 64bit, now I am wondering if this setup will be compatible fast and stable, it needs to be able to handle say about 15 browsers and 3-4 large programs open at once without bogging down.

Feel free to recommend different parts if this setup won't do it but please note that I am trying to stay within the $500.00 range .

Thanks,
Fisher

If your budget can affort it, you might want to look into a Q9300 2.5GHz processor. I haven't overclocked mine, but I've heard very good things from other builders in my local area about it's OC performance. It's also a 45nm chip architecture... so I believe that does better for heat given the OC you're looking to do.

I'm using that chip w/ 4GB of RAM right now and it runs very smooth. I haven't had as many windows open as you have... but I think you'd be good to go. I have been able to have a major game open (Witcher or COD4) while switching to browsers and having a couple background programs running.

Okay thanks for the reply, I'm not so worried about overclocking it from what I saw online it seems to be popular to overclock the Q6600 3.6GHz I could go less, I'm more worried about keeping it cool and not having a bottle necked system due to incompatible parts. I will check into the Q9300 though and see if I can afford it.

Thanks again,
Fisher

The parts you listed are compatible and should provide you with the performance you are looking for. You can probably save some money by getting a HD4670 with 512MB of ram as it won't take advantage of 1GB of ram. The Q6600 is a good processor which has performance close to that of the Q9300 and better overclocking if you get the G0 version of the Q6600.
