Computer powers on but will not boot

I recently built a new computer and I am having trouble getting it to boot, it powers on but nothing on my monitor shows up, here is the story.... I built the computer and had I was installing Vista when suddenly it shut off. I thought that it was restarting so I let it go. Then after about five minutes I figured something was wrong so I tried to turn it back on and nothing happened. It would turn on but would not boot. I also noticed that my optical drive would not work either. That was when I noticed that my CPU fan was snagged by a loose wire so I think that i fried the processor. I exchanged the processor for a new one and still have the same problems, I think it might be something else but I don't know what it could be. I have an XFX 8200 Motherboard, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2 CPU Black Edition, 600w ULTRA power supply, 3gb of ram, 500gb Western Digital SATA HD, and an XFX GeForce 8500 GT 512MB graphics card. I can turn on the computer but nothing comes up on the monitor. The CPU fan spins, the lights on the mobo come on and the light on the front of the computer comes on, but nothing on the monitor. The fan for the PS does not spin but I'm not sure if it is suppose to at all times. Could this be a power supply problem since the optical drive isn't working? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Get a new power supply. The fan is always soposed to be spinning. Ultra does not make quality PSUs. Take a look at a Corsair, FSP, PC power & cooling, etc. Here is a good one for example...

Good price right now too.

Thanks, that was my first thought but the guy at ULTRA's tech support convinced me that it was my processor and I had to waste my time exchanging the processor and fan. Thanks again for the help!

Change the PSU anyway, the fan should spin and should power the optical drive once powered on. Ultra PSU's are prone to failure.

Lets say it was the processor, would that have anything to do with the optical drive not working?

No, the CPU has nothing to do with the optical drive.

I really appreciate all the responses but my problem still exists. I changed my power supply and the same things are happening, the computer won't boot still. Everything comes on, the CPU fan, lights on the mobo, but nothing on my screen. Any other ideas?

What PSU did you change to?

That board has mixed reviews so keep that in mind as well.

I got a 650w Antec power supply. My brother got one and said it was good so I had him get me one too. I know the monitor is working properly. I have doubts that the motherboard is causing the problem because it is all lit up, could my mobo be the problem though?

Double check and make sure nothing is shorting out the motherboard. Do you have standoffs between the motherboard and the case?

Do you have and cpu heatsink/fan install properly as according to the manual included with the retail boxed processor?

Do you have both the main PSU 24-pin and the 4/8-pin atx12v connectors hooked up to the motherboard?

Okay I still can't get the computer to work. My new thought is that I somehow "overheated" the board when my fan got stuck. A loose wire prevented my fan from spinning which I wasn't aware of. I think that this would only destroy the fan (which it did) and not the motherboard, but could the power have gone back into the board and trashed it? I do not get any beeps when i turn on the computer, only the fan comes on, but the board's lights do light up. I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Alex

If the fan that went bad was plugged into the mother board, it could of taken out a voltage regulater that may be used for another part of the motherboard.
Myself, I only plug the CPU fan into the motherboard, case fans to the PSU direct. that way if a fan goes bad and draws a lot of current, the PSU is better suited to handle in.

Exclamation Asus Mobo help first boot up.

Ok Well i got the rest of my parts for my computer im building today so i put it together and tried to installed windows.

Heres the system so who ever steps in know what were dealing with.
Asus M3N72-D mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHZ CPu
4gb PC2 6400 Memory
Nvidia 9800gt Video Card
and a 250gb Western Digital Sata drive.

ok So i went o to start up for the first time and everthing seem normal got the Asus mobo. screen the soon after ask me for the system disk. Which then i inserted the windows disk and started to install windows.

Well apparently one of my copies of XP is a little scratch as it gave me an error saying it could not read the disc. So i follow the onscreen direction which everntually told me to reboot, which i did.

On the boot up I get the asus screen then is just stops in like a dos screen with a blinking cursor on the top left, and just sits tier. I have another copy of XP which i know works ( i just installed it on this computer a couple days ago) So how can i get it to do what it did the first time?

Help ME please!
