Question New Build

Hi gang

Ok this coming week one day I am going to be switching my computers. I have this new dual core Intel MOBO and CPU.

Now I am going to be using my old copy of XP that has all my stuff on it. I want to transfer this to me my new system and HD. So there is going to be a new MOBO, new HD, and CPU, ram, etc.

The info/suggestions I will need is the best way to do this. Either just install the old HD with all my stuff on it, then transfer it some how, or do this before hand. Would it be best to transfer my old HD to an external back up, or use some sort of a connection/program to transfer it after I do the switch.

Any and all ideas/suggestions accepted. :-)

Thanx and take care, and Happy Thanksgiving to all...........Gunny

If you are using a new hard drive, its no big deal. Put the new hard drive in, install XP. Then put your old drive in. You can either just leave it like that and access your files off the old drive or copy them to the new drive. Keep in mind the old drive still has XP on it, so that is kind of a waste of space. You could copy your files to your new drive, format the old one and use it however you wish, for additional storage or backup. In terms of how exactly to move the files, I just do drag and drop.

Hi mattaggie

I am asking this because of all the horror stories you hear about people transferring things from one HD to another. Loosing things, etc. I have this 250G external that is clean too. And I have the Acronis program too. This old HD is pretty old, and the one I have in the new build is new, so I am thinking why push my luck with the old drive, just move all the stuff from my old drive to the new one. Plus I have a HD in the old comp. that I use for all my junk, it don't have a OS on it, and not used very much, so I am using that one as is in the new build. I am going to use the external as a back up when all is said and done.

Thank you for your input/suggestions.

Thanx...Gunny

I've got Acronis also and really like it. If this were me... I'd likely to the following:

- Use Acronis to back-up my old HDD just in case everything goes to hell.
- Install the new HDD and install XP from scratch to begin clean.
- Copy all required files from the old HDD to the new one and check to make sure everything is working fine.
- Assuming all has gone well, wipe the old hard drive and utilize it for future storage as necessary.
