Need help for a new build
Hi everyone, I am new to the BYOPC thing
![]() I have upgraded parts and exchanged parts between PC's before, but I have never made a new PC from scratch. I think I just need advice on hardware choices and compatibility at the moment. I want to make a gaming PC, I have a very TIGHT budget of up to $1,000. I have been looking on newegg for most of my hardware as they seem to be the best. Here's what I have found so far: Antec Nine Hundred Case - $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021 ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 - $96 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131347 Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz - $160 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037 G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 1066 - $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166 EVGA 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 - $185 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130416 Antec TPQ-850 850W ATX12V / EPS12V PSU - $125 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371009 WDl Caviar SE16 320GB 7200RPM 16MB 3.0Gb/s *OEM* - $55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136074 Acer 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD - $150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145 I was wondering if these components are decent? If they are all compatible with each other? Also what does OEM mean for the HDD? Oh and I put the Monitor I had in mind also. Thank you soooo much in advance for all/any help I may get.

Looks like a good build.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means you will receive ONLY the hard drive....no boxes, software or cables. Your Motherboard will come with cables. You will need an optical drive and an Operating System. If you get a retail optical drive it should come with some burning software. |

Oh thank you, I have a CD/DVD drive on my current PC I can switch over.
So the mobo is a decent one right? Oh and the OS I will either get Vista Home Prem or XP Home. I don't have much exp with vista, but I heard it eats up MUCH more ram and just overall hardware power. TY for your reply.

Yes, the MOBO you have chosen is more than decent. I'm not a Vista fan but the hardware you have chosen will handle Vista with no problems.

Thank you very much for the fast and informative replies.
I hope I won't have any problems setting it up, I am ordering them soon. I will post my results and/or problems I may come up with.

Ummm...
I'm having second doubts about one thing atm. I looked at the specs on the Antec 850W PSU, and looked at a Corsair 750W PSU. The Corsair one has an output +12V @ 60A But the Antec one has an output +12V @ 18A Would that effect my graphic cards performance? Sorry for asking sooo many questions, just don't know much about all the details of these parts. Thank you so much in advance.

Could you provide a link to the Corsair PSU. The Antec has 4 +12V 18Amp rails for a total of 72Amps. I'm sure the 60Amps on the Corsair PSU is a combined total of all the +12V rails.

You can drop the psu down a bit. That's overkill.
Also, unless overcocking, that ram is overkill as well. You can drop down to ddr2-800 and be perfectly fine. That will also save you a bit more money.

Here is the Corsair one, its a bit cheaper too.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 And the memory, I just found these for a little cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 The few bucks I'd save wouldn't matter, would there be a noticable difference in the performance of the 1066 over the 800 MHz? Just so you know, the case is sold out. Newegg won't have any back in stock before the sale is over
I got one just before they sold out. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I still think it's worth paying the extra for the regular Newegg price for it, it's an amazing case.

That psu and ram look good.
Also check out this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184 You wouldn't notice any impovement with the more expensive ram unless you overclock. |

Oh and yea it was sold out, but I got a message saying they restock EVERY DAY. So I ordered mine the day after. ![]() EDIT: And yes, I will go with the 800MHz if it's not a big difference. Thanks a whole bunch once more.

My apologies careface. The Corsair PSU is listed as having a single 60Amp +12V rail.
I ordered the GSkill RAM (2X2 GB PC6400) today myself.

Or here's what I mean, which PSU would be better? ![]() EDIT: I forgot an important question I had. What is the difference between the Retail and OEM versions of the XP/Vista OS? Because the price difference is HUGE, is OEM like a one time installation or something? Last edited by careface; 11-29-2008 at 06:22 PM. |

That psu will be fine.
And the difference between oem and retail is that with oem you don't get the pretty box, and you can't call up for support. And you will have to probably call them if you ever change your motherboard to reactivate. |

I had a friend tell me that the 9000 series having some problems, and the older 8000 series and the new 200 ones being better. Is the vid card I chose a good card?

The difference is OEM is when you are building a brand new computer. The Retail is for people just upgrading over XP or putting it on a new hard drive(although you can use upgrade version for this)

and "so far" they have been trouble free. As with any new product line, you should keep up with revisions to the drivers. I keep the Nvidia website bookmarked and go there about once a week looking for bug fixes. |

Ummm...
Why am I not able to edit my old posts? Anyway, I ordered them, only thing changed was the memory to the G.SKILL 4GB(2x2GB@800) And the vid card to a PNY brand instead of the EVGA. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133246 I will post back results, or any problems ![]() Thank you all for all the support so far, this is a great community.
