I would suggest a better brand of MOBO and a Lite-On or LG brand DVDRW.

how bout this one?
ASUS M3A78-EM AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Only thing is it already has an onboard Graphics card, and it would go to waste.

You should look for a good brand, support for your processor, good board layout and good performance.

Everything looks good, make sure you get an OS if you need one. If can't fit an OS in your budget, take a look at getting a linux OS like Ubuntu and install WINE (which lets you run and install windows-type games and apps).

I'm gonna get XP. I'm still unsure about Vista.

139.00

Thanks! This should be the first of a number of them I plan to build in the future.

Quick question. Which operating system is the best right now? XP or Vista? also for the processor I have, should I get a 64 bit OS? Which is my best bet?

Yes if you have 4GB RAM so then all is recognized.

Its up to you. Vista has its bugs but then you have a better O.S (in my opinion)

I've had some trouble running 64-bit Vista, and Vista in general is slower than XP. If there isn't something you specifically like about Vista over XP, I would recommend getting XP, so far there are plenty of drivers for XP, it's stable, fast and has decent security. Other than DX10, Aero and a few other small features, Vista doesn't offer much over XP.

Vista has been great for me. I use Vista Business daily in a PC support environment and it's stable as can be. I don't think it's fair to say it's slower than XP if the system requirements are different for Vista. The OS itself (SP1) is not slower than XP with the proper system requirements.

If you use the same hardware for both OSes (let's assume the hardware is much higher than the recommended system requirements), you'll notice that XP is faster than Vista, most benchmarks and testing that compared both of the OSes show that XP is at least 10% faster than Vista.

I guess going back with XP may be my best bet. For multimedia purposes is Vista better?

Vista (Premium and Ultimate) are better than XP (Except for Media Center Edition) for multimedia if you want to use Windows Media Center, if you are using a third party application or windows media player and don't need Windows Media Center, any version will work fine. DirectX11 is supposed to come out with the release of Windows 7 (Windows Vista has support, XP does not), however you will need a DirectX11 video card (none available yet) and it may be the case like DirectX10 where the video cards that first came out could barely handle DirectX10 games (which were also lacking). It will probably be a few years before DirectX11 games become available.

If your Mobo comes with a video card, can you disable it or remove it so it doesn't interfere with the card you wanna use?

also..

I've completed my cpu, but now i'm having problem getting internet access!? I hook my modem up and its like it doesn't exist. basixcally it says there's no hardware hooked up.

I have vista.

You can disable the onboard video in the Bios. Some allow a "Auto" selection so you can use either without changing anything.
Did you install the Etherent drivers on the MOBO CD? Look in Device Manager and see if there are any yellow colored marks next to "Network Adapters".

I tried it and no go.I tried to download the drivers but it says no network card detected. I looked at the Device manager and they do pop up but there's no colors like you indicated.

OS is what you desire with this build, you did a great Job... If you love windows then pick what you want in terms of a multimedia experience. Vista Ultimate will give you what you are forced to using based on your software. Ubuntu 8.10 will give you a better experience in terms of a non-media, software investment, driven experience.
