*Gaming/Photo editing* Build - Please help!
First off - this place rocks! I've been browsing through all the different threads and can't believe the knowledge that is throwin' around here. What a great resource!
Down to the nuts-and-bolts: *would like to keep cost around $900* I am upgrading my current PC (btw I'm 26 and going into pharmacy school so money is a little tight) and the main things I will be using this new build for is a) games (call of duty, grand theft auto, crysis etc.) I want it to be able to handle demanding games fairly well b) photo editing (using photoshop CS3) as well as Dreamweaver for web editing and c) normal everyday stuff (which will definitely be covered!) lol I consider myself fairly savvy with computers but I've been out of the game for awhile. In the past few days I've been browsing newegg and my methodology for creating my PC is selecting the sectiion and clicking "top sellers" and going from there lol. I've scrolled through and this is what I have come up with. PLEASE CRITIQUE - I greatly appreciate all comments! CPU: AMD Phenom 9850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103249 MOBO: ASUS M3A78 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131340 RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145197 VIDEO CARD: EVGA 896-P3-1260-AR GeForce GTX 260 896MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130370 POWER: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 CASE: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021 DVD BURNER: LITE-ON Black 20X DVD *possible store bought item to take advantage of free software* http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106263 HD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218 That wraps it up - I have an OS already (probably gonna stick with XP) and monitor etc.. Again - I appreciate the help! Thanks! Last edited by RotoRX; 12-11-2008 at 09:45 PM. |

Welcome to PCMech.
Two things jump out. First, go with a better power supply. We recommend Corsair brand units. Just a bit more after rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 for a much higher quality unit. Second, go with a Retail LiteOn DVD Drive to get burning software. I'll let someone more familiar with AMD check that over.

Not sure how good the "free software" are with the DVD burner. I always go for full version like Roxio or Nero. But there's a lot of excellent Open Source DVD burner software around the net.

LiteOn Retail drives come with a copy of Nero Express (which has all the basic features most people would need).

Any comments about the parts listed? How's the video card look? The CPU/MOBO combo? Think this build could handle a semi-serious game player? And multi-tasking with Photoshop CS3 open and other apps (dreamweaver, etc?) FYI: What sparked this build was my inability (well my system's) to play Grand Theft Auto IV for PC. Granted, the game has a lot of bugs but my machine is still barely at the min requirements. Thanks! |

Quick update
I've decided to go with two video cards and I am thinking of the following (2) EVGA 512-P3-N975-AR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130380 I went to Nvidias website and it stated a 1000W power supply from Corsair- but other brands listed have 750W..can I get by with the 750W from corsair? Thank you! |

You're much better off getting one good card now and getting the next good card when it comes out rather than using SLI. The performance gain with SLI is not that great.

Thanks!
I haven't pressed the "submit" button but I am backing off and continuing with the items described above. FYI - I was talking to a guy at work about SLI and I got excited for the possibilities and was going to jump for it LOL But I am gonna hold off and stick with 1, thanks! |
