~1000USD gaming build. Advice please! :)
Hey all,
I'm looking to build a new computer, since my laptop is more or less dying. This is the first time I've done anything of the sort, so any advice is appreciated! The most demanding things I'll be doing with it is gaming (EVE, Fall Out 3, Guild Wars), as well as running calculations on Mathematica. I've tried to research this pretty thoroughly, but I'd really like some input from people who have more knowledge than me. In particular, is this all going to work stably together? Are there going to be any major bottlenecks? Any other suggestions? Hey Green,
We are both in the same boat regarding building our first game comp. Check out my build at *Gaming/Photo editing* Build - Please help! Were both going for the same Video card and PSU (a good sign I hope) ![]() A curiosity question, did you choose the intel CPU based on personal preference? Or what reason? Good luck and keep us posted on the build! |

Welcome to PCMech GW.
Looks like a nice build. Take a look at the Asus P5Q motherboard. They are top notch for quality, Gigabyte is not quite there. The RAM is overkill, DDR2-800 is still plenty fast. Finally, go with a Seagate hard drive. Samsung drives are poor quality.

Thanks all for your input!
Roto: Yes, our builds look quite similar, an AMD and an Intel version. There's no particular reason why I picked Intel, I'm not particularly loyal to them, but they have been whats in my prebuilt systems before, so I guess that gave me something to compare with ![]() Alaron: Is there any particular one of those mobo's that you recommend? (A search on newegg gave 22 different ones)

The base model, plain "Asus P5Q" is fine for most users. The extra models add various features, so if there is anything you know you'd need, look for that. And skip the "Open Box", they are returned boards. Working, but not fully accessorized.
