Newbie Building First PC

Good Day,

I am new to building pc's infact i have never done one before.
The pc that i would like to build will be used mainly to run auto cad and GIS , along with running graphic/photo editting softwares both corel draw and adobe photshop. I should have lots of space as my datas sets and my satelitte imagery (mainly ikonos) will be stored on the system. I multi task alot and dont want the unit to be hanging since there wil be more than one program open at any occasion. At times i will have to Autocad, Arc GIS, microsoft words and excel open, while at the odd time either of my graphic eddting softwae as well. I would like the pc to be able to handle the occasional gaming as i play fifa alot to destress in between assignments. pc should also be good on sound cause i like to blast my music that i have stored on my external hard drive and most times i have songs playing in the background while i work.

I do not need an operating systems, keyboard, mouse or speakers. I also do not need a monitor cause i have one already.

This is the link to the monitor that i will be using for this rig along with the speaker

monitor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001281

speaker -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836116025

Your assistance in helping me build this unit would be deeply appreciated and thanks.

Need to know your budget... Cad cards can be pricey...
What version of AutoCad?
What GIS Software are you using?
What Operating System?

Here is a link to the certified cards

Wow 700 to 1000? You make it tough on a guy

ATI 100-505507 FireGL V3600 $150.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814195048

Intel/Asus combo: Intel Q6600 / Asus P5Q $300.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.147992

OCZ 2gb memory: 81.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227230

Hard Drive WD 750 gig $90.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136283

Floppy disc drive: $8.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821103116

Rosewill case/with PS: $58.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147001

DVD/CD burner LG 22x $22.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136144

Ok, you are at $709.00 with out shipping... Although this is a decent card, it is a entry level certified card for Autocad...Spend the extra money on the ATI FireGL V5600 you will be glad you did and you will still be under $1000.00 with shipping. $949.00 with no shipping. Down the road if you get a little extra money drop another set (2gig) of the same ram in. You will see a little better speed...your board supports up to 8 gig.

ATI FireGL V7100: $390.00

You should keep the case and get this PSU as Rosewills are cr*p:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703016 $59.99 after rebate.

You should also get 4GB RAM too:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184 $39.99 after rebate.

I would consider a different case also. That Rosewill is a VERY flimsy case. I'd look at Cooler Master and Antec. PC 6400 RAM should be all you need. The RAM that tomtoon linked to would be a good choice.
Do you need a Floppy drive? A USB stick would be a better investment.

We

I was trying to keep it under 1000 and give him a better video card... The PS supply on that would be fine, I have built over a dozen of them and never had any problem. What video card did he decide? I do not like the memory either, oh well, I guess you guys no better. I have built this rig before and it rocked for cad.

if he bumped it up to 1500 then yes, I would go with the 2 gig x2 ddr1200 and that would leave him the option of adding an additional 4 gig set.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231201

and I would go with a better power supply but it was the best option for under 1000... this is a very nice case with good airflow and the power supply is decent (not crap) but yes, you could do better.

actually I would split the difference and keep the case, replace the power supply, and go to the next level of display.

YOU ARE running CAD,, the clock speed of this memory (if you go 4 gig)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231201
will make a huge difference. Trust all the other guys here, they are smarter than me.

Also, keep in mind that AutoCAD does not take advantage of multi-core processors. I would not worry about Quad-Core and spend the extra money on a faster Dual-Core CPU for the same price. Then you can use SMP Seesaw to isolate ACAD.EXE process/affinity level to one core, and the rest of your services/processes/programs to the other core. This GREATLY improves overall system response, especially on my machine.

And by all means, get a workstation level graphics card if ANY 3D will be used on a regular or semi-regular basis. If not, any gaming card will suffice extremely well for 2D drafting and modeling.

And make sure to get 4GB of ram and do the /3GB Switch. AutoCAD will definitely take advantage of the extra RAM if you're using WinXP Pro. DDR-2 is cheaper than air right now..... lol.

Hope this helps. I know its a little late for posting but better late than never.

Is it possible to build a pc with a $3-$500 budget. I obviously know it wouldnt have all the capabilities as others but will it turn out ok. Or scratch it and wait till you have a biggger budget.

If you want help in spec'ing out a build, please start your own thread.

And include budget, and what the use of it will be.

We will also need to know if that budget includes a OS, monitor, keyboar, mouse and speakers.

And if you have a preferance for amd or intel.

do you really need a good graphics card to do autocad? it's just 2D stuff

If you're doing 3D solid modeling, it's a different story

$3,000 is actually MORE than enough, way more for your average workstation capabilities. Anything more than the $2,000 - $2,500 price range is for very extreme high end.
