New Build (for a Friend)

Hello everyone, my friend is building a computer. He wishes to know if these parts are compatible.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 ($190)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017

Memory: Corsair 4GB ($55)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R ($115)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...k=GA-EP45-UD3R

Case: RAIDMAX SMILODON ATX-612WBP ($95)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...n%20atx-612wBP

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB ($75)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...6%20wd6400aaks

Graphics Card: SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB ($100)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...100225l%203870

CD Drive: Samsung 22x DVD Burner SH-S223F ($25)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...1&Tpk=sh-s223f

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit English ($100)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488

Is this all he needs? Does he need any extras, like cables, etc.? Oh yes, he also plans to put Ubuntu on this computer; it should work, right?

I would not trust the PSU that comes with the case, they are usually junk. Here is a good PSU-

We recommend Light on drives over Samsung and if you get the retail version it comes with Nero.

Also I have Ubuntu 8.10 on my build and everything works good but I have heard of some people having issues with ATI drivers in Linux. You might want to look at a Nvidia Geforce 9600GT or 9800GT.

Not that bad.

A few suggestions.

First, get a better power supply. That raidmax powersupply is garbage. Read this: What Power Supply should I get? How many Watts? Who made it? Guide Inside

Also, I would get either a lite-on or asus dvd burner. Sata and retail.

Might want to look at asus p5q for a motherboard.

And don't forget keyboard, mouse, and speakers, and monitor.

You need to look over the specs of the mobo because you have to make sure your hardware will work....

Your just missing a ethernet card......

Definitely get a different PSU. I don't care for most Raidmax cases because they are usually pretty cheaply made but that one seems to be well built.
For optical Drives.......I prefer LG & Lite-On. The OEM versions both come with burning software.

This is a nice build, Ubuntu 8.10 will work right out of the box for it. Make sure you install Vista first, read up on the dual boot prior but it is easy. I would suggest changing the power supply as well... Maybe add a card reader...

if he plans on adding an additional video card consider this power supply...

Wow, thanks for all of the quick replies! Since you guys recommended getting a separate PSU, could you also point me toward a good case? My friend has a upper limit of ~$800. He doesn't need a monitor, etc. because he already has them.

I really hope this works, as I was the one who introduced him to the idea of PC building, and I will be helping him assemble this computer (my first experience too!).

P.S. To repeat, he doesn't need any extra cables, right? Are they provided? I was thinking they would be, seeing as all the parts are "Retail".

The motherboard should come with at least two SATA cables, so you shouldn't need any extra cables.

I would have stayed with the original ram you choose. The rebate would have lowered the total cost.

And you will have all the cables you need. The only other thing you will need is a screwdriver.

Oh! I never saw that rebate...
It's too late anyway though.
