new build advice
Hi, I'm new here and I'm thinking about building a new PC. I don't really have a budget, but I don't want to spend too much money. I'm a retail buyer so I don't use newegg. Here is what I'm thinking of getting:
Case: Thermaltake - Soprano Mid-Tower Case - Black http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1203815240653 PSU:Antec - EarthWatts 500-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1188560188623 Motherboard: ECS G31T-M Socket 775 Motherboard http://shop1.frys.com/product/532553...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG CPU: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8400 - BX80570E8400 - Box CPU - Socket LGA775 http://shop1.frys.com/product/549973...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG HDD: Western Digital - 320GB Internal Hard Drive for Desktops http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1142294266836 RAM: Corsair - 2GB DDR2 Desktop Memory http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1200703058743 Optical Drive: LG 22x Black Bezel Internal Dual-Layer DVD-/+RW Drive http://shop2.frys.com/product/562906...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG Sound Card: Dynex® - 5.1-Channel PCI Sound Card http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1110267355627 Video Card: PNY - Verto NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express Graphics Card http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1217029991823 Is this good? |

I would change that motherboard.
Look at an asus. The p5q is popular and highly recomended. At the same time, you might want to try the onboard audio and drop the sound card. I also perfer lite-on or asus dvd burners.

Same advice as shadowpr except the optical drive..... LG's are very good units but I don't care for lightscribe.
The OEM SATA model, from, Newegg, comes with a good software bundle. Newegg also has the LS for $23 w/free shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136149 |

I don't know what you mean exactly by being a "retail buyer", but newegg has substantially better prices on most of those parts you listed. Just a quick check and I found about $150 in savings at newegg.
Their customer service is very good, they deliver fast and have a good return policy. |

You don't usually need a sound card as onboard sound on modern motherboards is quite good anymore. I agree with Shadowpr get an Asus P5Q. Here is a nice one- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131295

I'll use this computer for gaming but not too extreme. What I meant by retail buyer is that I only shop in retail stores. I can't shop online because I don't have a credit card or any form of paying online

I think it is a nice build, should give you what you are looking for... Nice Job! Have fun building it... Oh you could drop the sound card, the board has pretty good on board sound. If you do decide to still go with the sound card, just don't install the on board drivers.

Newegg used to accept Money Orders. It would be worth your time to check.
Give the onboard sound a try. You can always get a sound card later if you aren't satisfied with the onboard. |
