New Build (HTPC)

Ok gonna try this again. I have two builds I'm going to do, one is for gaming and will have it's own monitor (This build has it's own thread that I have made recently) and the other will be connected to my HDTV and be used as an HTPC. My budget is $1500. This is just what I'm starting with, I'll add more HDDs later. I plan to use the 80 GB for the OS/programs, the first 1 TB for Storage and the second 1 TB to back up the first one. Also I'm not interested in RAID, TV Tuners or Wireless Streaming; It's gonna connect directly to my TV with HDMI. I will use it for Blu-Rays, Hi-Def MKV files (Anime fansubs), and for back-up VOBs of my dvds I own.

Everything looks good, but I would take a look at a different video card, I've found ATI cards to have much better video quality/processing than Nvidia cards. Here is a good ATI card for your build with a similar price as the Nvidia card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131135 (This one is fanless meaning it will make no noise, however it will take up the adjacent slot which shouldn't be an issue unless you have a lot of expansion cards to install). From what I can tell looking at their website, CCCP Codec is supported on Vista.

Thanks Masaki, I've heard that about ATI cards from somewhere before. Although it doesn't come with a DVI to HDMI adapter, I'll just have to buy one seperate, do I loose any quality going from DVI to HDMI? Also can anyone recommend a good sound card? Because the HDMI connection from my video card will only do video obviously. I'll need one the can connect into my 5.1, but I don't remember seeing any with RCA outs. What is the alternative to this? Is there a way to produce Hi-Def sound?

Consider this keyboard if you want a single wireless device to control your HTPC. I have one and have set others up with them and it has worked out great.

If this is just a HTPC build, you can save money by getting lower specs.

MB: Asus P5kpl-cm
Ram: Corsair 2x2gb ddr2-800
CPU: E5200
PSU: Corsair 550
Only the one bluray drive instead of an extra dvd burner.

Might also want to forget about the tool kit, as long as you have a few basic tools at home already. All you really need is usually a screw driver.

And you can get a cheaper case too.

You'll want to get this DVI to HDMI adapter for the ATI video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814999010
The HD4650 has built in 7.1 sound chip that allows you to have both video and audio streamed through the DVI to HDMI adapter and over HDMI.
