upgrading computer

im going to upgrade my pc when my dad gets taxes
hehehe anywayse im posting the old and new stuff

please dont laugh at my out dated pc

keeping the old case might buy a new hd


  1. CPU: old AMD duron 1.2ghz| new im going to look at local pc shop
  2. RAM: old 1 stick of 256mb pc2100 ram| new OCZ PC2-6400 DDR2 Fatal1ty Edition 4GB
  3. VIDEO CARD: old ATI Radon 9250 | new nVIDIA GeForce 9600GT 512MB
  4. SOUND CARD: old on board soundcard | new Diamond 7.1 sound card
  5. MOTHERBOARD: old PCChips M848A MOBO | new im going to look at local pc shop
  6. POWER SUPPLY: old lol i dont know | new Antec True power 650w
  7. CD DRIVE: old LG 52x cd reader | Aopen Internal DVD Burner il post specs a little further down
  8. Operating system: old windows 2000 pro| new Win XP pro SP2

DVD burner specs
Read Speed: 48x (CD) / 20x (DVD)
Write Speed: 48x (CD) / 20x (DVD±R) / 8x (DVD±R DL)
Rewrite Speed: 32x (CD) / 6x (DVD-RW) / 8x (DVD+RW) / 12x (DVD-RAM)

Save some money and give the onboard sound a try. Good MOBO's have very acceptable onboard audio.

You will probably want a new case for better cooling and looks, here is a nice case.

Also you probably don't need a sound card because the onboard sound on newer motherboard is very good and if you decide you want a sound card you can always get one later.

That list looks fine for a midrange PC. The 9600GT is a good bang for the buck video card, it should game pretty well.

Wally and Newegg are about the same price for XP but I haven't seen XP w/SP3 at Wal-Mart...only SP2.

Wal-Mart doesn't have XP listed on their web site but it's $90 at my local store. But, as I mentioned, it is SP/2.
