Slim Case First Build
Let me start by saying thank you to everyone on this forum who helped me in my previous build. The knowledge gained here was unbelievable and the PC is up and running strong for 6 months now.
Ever since I built my first PC (which I built at work since it was a surprise for the wife) my coworkers have been saying they wanted me to build them one. Well, the time has come and one co-worker did just that. Therefore, I'm hoping you all can check to see if what I've selected will play nicely with each other. He is on a $750 budget and slightly more if necessary. His Dell quote for an equivalent system was $1100 and he'd like to be below that a couple hundred. His main usage is Photoshop, word processing, and internet. So, the only gaming on this machine will be some hardcore solitaire. His only other stipulation is that he wants a slim case. I tried to find a case with a PSU supplied (even though I know most provided PSU's suck) because I wasn't sure where to find a "slim" PSU. Without further adieu, here is the system: MOBO: $88.99 - GIGABYTE GA-EG41MF-S2H LGA 775 Intel G41 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128367 CPU: $189.99 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 OS: $99.99 - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488 MONITOR: $169.99 (reg. $199.99) - Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145 RAM: $39.99 (reg. $49.99) - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 HDD: $54.99 - SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152052 OPT: $22.99 - SAMSUNG 20X DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model TS-H653N - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151179 GPU: $42.99 - GIGABYTE GV-R435OC-512I Radeon HD 4350 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125251 KEY/MSE: $34.99 - Logitech EX 90 Black USB RF Wireless Cordless Desktop - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823126045 CASE: $49.99 (reg.$64.99) - Rosewill R379-SM Black/ Silver 0.8mm SGCC Steel MicroATX Slim Case Computer Case PSU ATX12V Flex 300W Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147098 Total (before shipping/including current discounts): $794.90 Will all these parts play nicely? Hey Chappy, I've been looking at similar cases and the PSU has been my concern also. I was reading another thread and an In Win case was mentioned that had a bundled PSU. glc had his normal concerns about it and the poster said that he believed that the unit was a FSP manufactured one.(They are on the "Good" list.)
glc,s concerns are well justified (as when a poor power supply goes, it can take other stuff with it). I'd check out that for good measure. Guess my other concerns would be the slimline's cooling ability with a 65nm processor. It definitely could use every trick to help with that (especially when using a video card) and maybe the 45nm processors would help to that end. Cool building can be tricky with small cases. (Just throwing out some ideas here.) The slightly larger, slim HTPC cases tend to have better cooling and take a standard PSU. Keep us abreast here...be real good to see how things work out!!! |

You don't need a graphics card, that mobo comes with onboard video. The PSU that comes with that case is probably junk, its a rosewill. Are you sure he couldn't use a normal micro ATX case? like this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811108092
Here is a cheaper but just as good mobo- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131288 That monitor you picked out is very nice, I have one for my PC and it is beautiful.

Rosewill cases are very flimsy and their PSU's are not good quality.
I would also go with the Asus MOBO that amdalex suggested. I prefer Seagate HDD's and LG or Lite-On Optical drives. Both OEM version come with burning software. |

Wow, thanks for the quick responses. I've updated the parts above with the parts you all suggested (noted by an asterisk) because I completely agree in regards to Seagate's and Lite-On's (I have those in my personal machine) and I honestly was not aware of the ASUS motherboard.
If you don't mind me asking, why is the ASUS better than the Gigabyte I'd listed? I truly don't know and I'd love to learn why to be more educated in the future. (This was the old one before I updated the list "MOBO: $88.99 - GIGABYTE GA-EG41MF-S2H LGA 775 Intel G41 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail") Also, should I order him a new PSU or is the IN-WIN PSU that comes with the case a quality unit (I'm assuming not)? Thanks again for all the assistance. Technology just moves so dang fast. --Updated List-- **MOBO: $54.99 - ASUS P5KPL-CM LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131288 CPU: $189.99 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 OS: $99.99 - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488 MONITOR: $169.99 (reg. $199.99) - Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145 RAM: $39.99 (reg. $49.99) - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 **HDD: $64.99 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288 **OPT: $25.99 - LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106264 GPU: $42.99 - GIGABYTE GV-R435OC-512I Radeon HD 4350 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125251 KEY/MSE: $34.99 - Logitech EX 90 Black USB RF Wireless Cordless Desktop - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823126045 **CASE: $64.99 - IN WIN IW-BK623.BN300BL 0.6mm SECC Steel MicroATX Desktop Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811108092 Total (before shipping/including current discounts): $745.91 Last edited by ChappyEight; 12-30-2008 at 07:13 AM. |

The Newegg ad doesn't give any specs for the PSU so it would be a guess about it being sufficient.

The PSU's in Inwin cases are good quality, they are made by Delta which is a good brand.

Now it's Delta? It was FSP.
I would recommend something other than that Kentsfield core due to cooling and power concerns. Go with either a Wolfdale dual core or a Yorkfield quad. |

FSP is good. So is Delta.
If you want more than 300 watts, look at the Athena and Antec slim cases. Those are decent PSU's. |

I have that InWin case and like it. It allows full size add-on cards but is very shallow front to back and short. It is annoying that it doesnt tell you exaclty what power supply you are getting with the case. And if you every want to replace the PSU, it takes the small kind, called BTX I think.
