Motherboard Replacement build

Following this thread:

K8N Cmos jumper

I would like to know what Motherboard is good to replace my busted Asus K8N? The existing components are AMD 64 Athlon 3000+, 80Gig Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 Hard drive, Club Radeon x800 Pro AGP graphics card and the Ram I think is DDR but I know at least that it is compatible. I hope that’s enough information if not feel free to ask for more.

The budget is just to get it working again so hopefully that’s just the Motherboard. I use it for music recording and playing Q4 at the most but otherwise just things like word processing and Internet.

regards,

Is that a Socket 754 motherboard? If it is, you won't find any brand new ones available. You'll have to go to the secondary market (eBay) to look for something compatible or a exact replacement.

I don't care whether it's Asus or not, but who the hell makes THAT thing? The only hit I can find is the brand name "Clea".

I don't think the OP can buy from Geeks - he/she hasn't put his/her location in his/her profile, but with my admin powers I believe he/she has a UK IP. Nobody over there has any 754's, Ebay is probably the best bet.

Send a message via AIM to Alaron
It's much more likely they didn't though.

It's a lot more likely that PC Chips made it.

Thanks for the advice, yes Cricket I think it is a 754.

While searching I found the exact (broken) one I have.

http://hothardware.com/articles/The-...4-Motherboard/

Theres some stuff on a google.co.uk for "K8N 754" all of which is out of stock so as suggested the 2nd hand market is worth a try, on Ebay I can find one Asus K8N. If it comes to that I can't find an Asus does anyone have any suggestions of other 754's that I could go for? 1st or 2nd hand? lots of MSI's around.

Since it's a Socket 754 based system it's gotta be over 5 years old by now...building a brand new computer out of the question?

To repair with new technology, the motherboard, processor, ram, and video card will have to be replaced - and the power supply may have to be replaced too. The ONLY alternatives to a 754 (if you want to replace just the motherboard and processor) would be a (rare) AGP Socket 939 or an Intel 478. Anything newer will be PCI-E and DDR2.

I did some googling, and the only thing I found about who makes it is where it was made China, so that should tell you something.. I found another site, that says Manufactured by SIS..

It's a SiS chipset, but I don't think SiS ever actually manufactured motherboards.

A shame its so different from cars, there's loads of parts around for them dating back many years and you don't need to buy a whole new car with a new part hehe!

What about Gigabyte? or ASrock those are 2 other makes I found recently. I also found an Asus K8V but it says "micro ATX" does "ATX" mean for the size of case? could I get one of those and just get another case? I will probably make my mind up soon.

I will look into the new technology but wont be buying, the last upgrade I got was for things like Doom 3, I wonder what is the current high performance standard is?

A micro ATX board will fit in a standard ATX case no problem. It's just a lot smaller. The mounting holes are standardized. Gigabytes are decent, Asrock is questionable.

I dont know what you budget is but this board, CPU and RAM will run about $200 and be upgradeable for a while.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131325
board has a PCIe 2.0 slot, its an enthusiasts board with an HD 3200 IGP that will handle most games well. I was playing Doom 3 on my X1250.

Dual core CPU

This is the Brisbane version of the CPU I use, it works well and is decently fast.

decent RAM

that is a pretty cool system board, you can do just about anything with that bios, tons of tweaks... one of the best boards for 100.00 but not the greatest for a newbie.

Thanks for the advice glc, when I 1st read "AsRock" I thought it might have been an offshoot of Asus because of the similarity in the name.

Interesting links phigdon never seen a site with as much as 254 customer reviews for a product and good for $200 / £138 for all 3.

Asrock is owned by Asus but the boards are manufactured by ECS.

jdeb, I looked long and hard at that board but went for the M3A78-T for another $40 and got the better chipset and IGP.

glc, did not know that, thanks for the info. Whats the standard difference between Asus, AsRock, and ECS? ie. Black & Decker owns DeWalt but the B&D power tools are junk.

K8N, lol there are CPU reviews around 1200 in there. I dont know if you are able to order from the egg, but just the reviews alone are worth bookmarking the site.

I managed to find the AGPx8 compatible Asus K8V-XSE (OEM) it should be delivered soon. The egg site looks more free range with its information and reviews, definately one worth keeping in the basket.

Its delivered. So I need to take out the old one and screw in the new one, set the jumpers, attach the rest of the hardware and plug all the wires in and that it?

It asks to reebot and select proper boot device. I reset and press "delete" to go into setup and it only has only the Primary IDE slave picking up the CD drive, and with the windows CD in there it does nothing it is supposed to?. There's DVD drive in the Primary master and HD in the SATAm neither of which seem to register. Any advice would be great, thanks.

Sometimes you have to take a chance and use what you can get. Been there, done that, and I'm batting about .500 so far. I haven't had to use THAT much of an offbrand yet, I just grit my teeth when I have to use something like MSI, Biostar, or DFI.

No - the reason I closed that thread is because you started this one on the same issue. We don't want multiple threads going on the same issue because it kills continuity.
