Finally replacing my XPS Gen III...with a new first build!
So, I've decided my Dell XPS Gen III was too old / slow /deafeningly loud and went to tackle my first build. Here's my component list so far (it has yet to be assembled as I am still ordering parts as you will see). Here's what I have so far:
Case - Cooler Master Cosmos PSU - Cooler Master 850w RAM - 4gb kingston ddr3 1333 HD - seagate 500gb 7200rpm & 10k raptor (getting raptor from a buddy...I'll take it thanks!) soundcard - soundblaster x-fi cd / dvd - LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe vc - PNY 9800 gt 1024mb So, that's what I have right now...since I managed to get a bunch of this stuff for christmas / b-day, it really opened my budget for a better CPU / mobo. So below is what I'm looking at. Thoughts? (One thing I thought of was that the video card is PCI-e, where the mobo only has PCI-e 2.0....will I need to 'upgrade' the video card to be compatible?) ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel mobo Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core cpu Any other system comments / suggestions are welcome. Basically, I have a budget of $600-$700 remaining for the CPU / mobo. I feel like a noob (I AM a noob) but that's why I lurk and joined these forums....

The video card will work since PCI-E is backwards and forwards compatible. That's a real strong build you got there, everything should work great.

I found out the video card I had is indeed PCI 2.0, it just didn't state clearly on the package so I assumed it wasn't 2.0.
I ordered the CPU / Mobo mentioned above last night. Can't wait!!! Hopefully will be able to get the build done this upcoming weekend....

Today's the day......gonna start the build in a few hours later this morning.
![]() Yes, I will be upgrading the video card when possible - probably a few months...I realize it will probably be one of the bottlenecks on this system but it will be fine for now. I also chose to run Vista home premium 64 bit after feedback from others. I can always make the jump to 7 when it comes out. |

Well, I'm pleased to report that I'm sending this e-mail from my NEW BUILD!!! Yeah!! Everything went great and all the hardware worked perfect. It took a bit of playing around to get Vista 64 to recognize / install the HD, but really that was the only hurdle. Temps are looking good and everything is flying.
Lovin it!!
