should i build new computer?

hi, you may of seen my post in the HD's section as im having alot of trouble getting SATA or IDE drives to install windows so i am thinking of building a new computer

first of all to decide whether or not to build one now i need to ask...

windows 7 is due out in autumn/fall which i want to get straight away so with the hardware available today will it all be compatable for windows 7's release? i think it will be directx 11(?) so i assume a new GPU will be required so i dont mind putting up with the cheapest DX10 Ati card that can run call of duty 4 on full settings till then.

EDIT: i have done a bit of research and it seems you will be able to use windows 7 with todays hardware, if thats true why wouldn't DX9 cards work with DX10?

thanks for reading.

I think as of right now, Windows 7 requirements are similar to those of vista. But, it is still just a beta, and things can change so you never know what or when it will be a final product.

As for doing a build, what is your budget?

Is it going to be a gaming build?

Intel or amd?

As for dx9 cards, they can play all the games out today, but just not take advantage of dx10. The same applies to windows xp. XP doesn't support dx10. All the newer cards out now do support dx10.

I think it's a bit early to plan a Windows 7 build.

thanks for reply shadowpr but i think glc is probably right, i will wait, however i may consider upgrading my current build, just the MOTHERBOARD, CPU and (RAM if i need to).

as you can see from my sig my board is old and i dont think its exactly top of the range, same with cpu so i just want something that is almost top of the range (as i like the best) to last me till windows 7 comes out.

i would like a phenom, doesnt havto be super fast maybe a 9950?

and motherboard i would like to spend similar amount but i would like a good one, preferably abit, asus or MSI as i think these are some of the best makes, i also want it to have the best chipset a all the latest features.

its all for gaming (mainly cod 4 and left 4 dead) and general net use.

if i need to upgrade anything else so its compatable with the mobo and cpu you recommend i can do that later.

have 9600GT and 600W PSU.

thanks.

I don't know...buy a retail copy of XP (or Vista) on cl @$50+ (if you can't reuse your current one), do your build and resell it. An upcoming OS is not something to wait for for me at least. A rule of thumb around here is...if you need it, build it Stuff never stops changing to new tech. I run DX9 on Vista fine... so I bet that'll be true for DX10 and Win7.

asus or msi it is then!

and "bd1998" yeah i think i just had high hopes of wanting to build one now that will be top tech still for windows 7, as i dont have the money to upgrade all the time anymore, but thats guna happen.

so can anyone recommend me a good motherboard and cpu either amd or intel, although i prefer amd personally, for around £200 which i think is about $300

and also some memory to go with them for about £50 to £100/$75 to $150?
