Got $500 to Build for a Friend...
I've got 500 bucks to spend on a build for a friend, and it needs to stay right at that 500 dollar mark, INCLUDING tax and shipping, so that's somewhere around $450 for parts. This rig is going to be used for basic stuff, word, excel, surfing, email, pictures, videos, basic games (not gaming, I'm talking about online poker, etc.) So nothing too intensive.
Here's what I put together on the quick, please let me know your thoughts, where I can do better, if everything is compatible, where I may have gone overboard....thanks!!! CPU: Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116052 MOBO: Intel BOXDG31GL LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121341 RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 PSU: FSP Group SAGA+ 450R 450W ATX12V Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 OPTICAL DRIVE: SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151171 OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 CASE: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel , SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068 |

for a few more dolloars
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072 People here typically recommend Asus motherboards and Lite-On optical drives. You probably dont need 4GB, but RAM is so cheap right now. Only a 64 bit operating system will recognize more than 3GB. Overall looks like a nice build. |

For the same price, an Asus P5KPL-CM is a more fully featured motherboard. I fully concur with the E5200 recommendation. To cut the cost a bit, an Antec Basiq 350 power supply is all you need at 20 bucks.

Agreed on the Asus P5KPL-CM and the E5200.
LG or Lite-On for an optical drive. |

Great recommendations so far, CPU is much better and the MOBO has a PCI 16 slot for a graphics card down the line. And that Antec PSU is a good one for only $20???
Here's the updated list: CPU: Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072 MOBO: ASUS P5KPL-CM LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131288 RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 PSU: Antec Basiq BP-350B 350W ATX12V Version 2.01 Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371013 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 OPTICAL DRIVE: SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151171 OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 CASE: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum, SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068 I know the RAM is overkill, but it's too cheap to pass up. Anybody have anything else? So far you guys are coming through once again. |

If you are planning on a video card later, spend another 20 bucks and get a Basiq 500. I would replace that DVD burner with a Lite-On or LG.

Ok, I'll change over to the this Burner:
LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X (CAV) DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136152 But any particular reason? The Samsung had equally good reviews. Just curious. I'm not even going to consider the graphics card right now, he probably won't ever be needing one. BUT, I will have to upgrade the PSU, the $20 Antec one only has one SATA connector, I need two, one for HD, one for DVD, so I had to look for something else....here's a couple I found that look good and still fairly cheap: FSP Group SAGA+ 400R 400W ATX12V Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104953 Rosewill Stallion Series RD400-2-SB 400W ATX V2.2 Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182074 |

The motherboard comes with one Molex to SATA power adapter.
Samsung optical drives do not have a good reliability record. |

Ok, good, but before I make the order, let me ask anyone out there reading this, THIS.....if YOU had 500 bucks to put a computer together for the medium intensity uses I outlined in the beginning of this thread, what components would YOU choose? Would any of you be going with an AMD based system instead? I would really like to know this....

That is a great list. You could spec out something similar with AMD, but it really wouldn't make any major difference when it comes to performance for the money. Your friend will be quite happy with your setup as it stands.

If it was me, the only things I would change might be the case, and maybe the dvd drive for either a lite-on or asus. I just like those brands, and have experience with them.

If this machine will be used as basically as you say: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...ABA-DT&cat=SYS With what you save you can upgrade the ram, DVD to a burner and a decent power supply.

Are you replying to me or to jdeb? My list includes a copy of XP and is about 430 bucks on newegg for parts, and just under 500 including shipping and tax.
Also, kind of surprised you're recommending a retail brand? I could drive over to best buy and get a decent system for about 400, but i just don't want to be stuck with their parts and upgrading according to their limitations. I will admit, that jdeb and masaki have peaked my curiosity at possibly switching over to, or at least looking more into an amd build. Can anyone look at the system I'm proposing with glc and shadowpr's help and the amd systems that jdeb and masaki put together and provide some input? I suggest LG or Lite-On's because I know them to be reliable. I burn about 20 DVD's/week on average at 16X and don't make any coasters (Verbatim +R 16X media). I prefer the LG because they are quieter and smoother operating. They also come with a better software bundle when buying OEM. |

By the sound of it you are building this machine for someone who is possibly not too computer savvy, sometimes in a situation like this it is better to go with a prebuilt.
You have the knowledge that all the parts are compatible and that the machine is fully covered by a warranty. If you have all the time in the world to assist your friend with any problem that arises, fine, but if he or she lives a distance away and you have school/college or work to attend, then helping them can become a bit of a headache. $500 is not a lot of money so I am guessing your friend doesn't have a lot of money to spare, will he or she have spare money in two years time when support for XP ends? |

Yes you're absolutely right, I find myself helping him with his computer all the time regardless. He has a prebuilt now, but its a few years old, so the issues are adding up, and it's getting pretty slow. I told him I could build him one and then helping him fix it / upgrade it will actually be easier for me. He's pretty close by, so I don't mind helping when he does something stupid.
I think I'll go with the following final list and I'm sure he'll be happy with it. Thanks a million once again for all your help. CPU: Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072 MOBO: ASUS P5KPL-CM LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131288 RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 PSU: Antec Basiq BP-350B 350W ATX12V Version 2.01 Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371013 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 OPTICAL DRIVE: LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X (CAV) DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136152 OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 CASE: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum, SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068 I just have to ask, because I've been relying on these forums for great advice for some time....is everyone on here completely unbiased? By unbiased I mean members dont receive in any way any benefit from making the recommendations for certain products other than genuinely thinking that they are the best choices. Here's what I mean. ASUS can't be the only manufacturer in the world that makes good boards, Corsair can't be the only company in the world that makes good memory, LG burners, etc. When I look at reviews on other sites, plenty of other boards and memory and burners etc. get great "grades".....???? |

As far as I know, everyone here makes recommendations based on personal experiences and the experiences of others from this board.
Many of us will recommend different brands, but we will also usually start out with the basic recommendations of certain brands. |

I base my brand recommendations on about 15 years of experience. I recommend what I've had the least number of issues with. I'm far from unbiased (example - I refuse to build anything except with an Intel processor on a motherboard with an Intel chipset), but I have never received anything from anyone for choosing anything in particular.

Your final list looks fine to me.
Save yourself $30 and download service pack 3. http://www.9software.com/product_p/w...htm&Click=5673 I have bought from these guys a few times and they are ok, they have been listed with pricewatch.com since 1999. I wish someone did pay me/reward me for my reccomendations.......

I foresee less trips to your friends house to help him out with the custom build. They are much easier to diagnose and repair.
