Unhappy New System - Very Slow

Just built a new pc but it is running very slow. I was copying some files from an external HD and a jump drive I had and it seemed to be running at USB 1.1 speed rather than 2.0. Also, I tried playing some videos (high quality) but they were lagging. Folders seem to be opening slowly as well. (actually my text while posting this lagged up)

Last night I formatted the HD for the first time using NTFS and installed Win XP Pro.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your time!

System Specs:

ASUS M3A MB
AMD Phenom 9500
4 GB Corsair RAM
750 GB WD SATA HD
Lite-On DVD Burner IDE
EVGA Geforce 9400 GT 1 GB
Belkin PCI Wireless Card
450W PSU (Came with case)

Are all the motherboard drivers installed from the Asus CD/DVD? Are the video drivers installed?

What brand and model is the power supply, please?

Those are not well-made power supplies. I'm not saying that is the cause of your issues, but I'd replace it with a higher quality unit.

Got ya. I was planning on getting a new PSU when I was getting parts, but case came with one so I thought I'd try.

Thanks for the info, glc. I appreciate it!

The "lagging" sounds like a video driver problem. Did you install the latest graphics drivers ?

I first installed the drivers from the CD, then shortly I installed the latest drivers (Jan 8, 2009). It was lagging even when trying to transfer from external drives.

I have ordered an Ultra 550 W PSU though.

Ultra is just as bad. You need to stay away from Tiger Direct. You might want to read the power supply stickies in the General Hardware forum.

You might want to get this one off NewEgg:

OCZ SXS 500W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341012
$24.99 after rebate.

or this one if you really need 550w:

BFG 550W:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817702010
$64.99

A 9400GT doesn't need much power. 400 quality watts is plenty.
