Upgrading ?

Hi!

I just registered to this forum so sorry if I get anything wrong. I figured I would put this thread in this forum since i would be building my new PC out of new parts and ones from my old rig.

My current(or old) PC is pretty terrible. I bought it around six years ago and never really updated it. Here are the specs:

-Windows XP Home Edition
-AMD Duron 1600 MHZ(1.6GHZ)
-1GB of Ram
-Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT AGP(only recently did I add this in, the computer really cant take advantage of it because the rest of the PC isnt really up to par with the video card.. not that the video card is new.) Used to have ATI Radeon 9550.
-Everest doesnt have a MOBO name but I think this is it. VIA Unicrome 266 Pro

I am looking for an upgrade because I play video games and although I used to be able to run the ones I play(World of Warcraft) recent expansions and graphic updates make playing the game near impossible. I was looking on the website tigerdirect.ca and found a pretty good deal.. I have a very tight budget right now so I can barely spend anything but I was really looking to see if the deal I was getting was good.

Biostar P4M900M7 FE Socket 775 Barebone Kit:
Biostar P4M900-M7 FE
ATX Mid-Tower Case(I need one, my father put a dent in the tower I have, he threw the entire PC down the hallway)
450 Watt Power Supply
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2 GHZ OEM Processor
2GB of Ram(Kingston brand)

All of that is 194.99 before tax.

The kit doesnt come with a fan for the CPU so im picking one of those up for like 20-30 dollars on the website. I would be using the same video card, hard drive, and disk drive because they all are fine, its just the processor and mobo on the previous computer are really out of date and they just arent holding up anymore. I know this computer wouldnt be AMAZING but I am just looking for a place to start, and I would upgrade as I go.

After all is said and done I would be paying for a computer at roughly 230 to 240 dollars.

Here is the link to the kit by the way: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...=B450-2372%20C

Id be glad to here some opinions, if they arent too brutal.

Trying not to be too brutal but I would save your money until you can get some better hardware.
BioStar's are not good boards, the PowerUp cases are pretty flimsy and I have serious doubts about the included Power Supply.
For about double the price you have there you can build a very solid PC. There are some very nice $500 builds listed within.
I would also suggest looking at Newegg.

you will be getting what you pay for and it is a pretty good deal but....
your video card will not work with board so you can figure an additional 50 to 80 bucks for a budget video card. I would recommend a msi r4670 for that board.

Please don't buy a motherboard with a VIA chipset for an Intel processor. If you need a low priced board for that processor, look for an Asus P5KPL-CM. Stay away from Tiger Direct - they sell a lot of junk - and look at ncix.com and newegg.ca.

Lightbulb Upgrade changes

Hi, as I said in my first post i am building a new PC(using some old parts).

I have a very tight budget and I am only looking for a nice place to start upgrading. My previous choices seem to have been bad so I looked more on different websites and found the following.
I curently need a CPU, a MOBO, a Power Supply, a mid size tower, and ram. I have aquired a mid sized tower recently that is decent. And it will work with this motherboard(ATX). The rest pans out around 250ish dollars.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.150317
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817709012

I looked at reviews and the combo seems real nice so i put that down. And yeah the PSU is pretty cheap. But I am going to start upgrading as soon as the money flows in so that should only be a temporary thing. All I really do on it is play World of Warcraft and I think this should be good for WoW on at least medium settings(I have a decent video card. I am not buying the mobo for the onboard video.. it will most likely suck).

So any opinion on whether you think this is a good place to start would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Please do not get that power supply. An Antec Basiq 500 at $40 is *MUCH* safer.

You are going to have to use the onboard video for a while because an AGP card will not work in that motherboard. My stepdaughter plays WoW okay on a laptop with onboard Intel graphics. The IGP on that mobo is actually quite good.

Admin note: I merged your 2 threads. We prefer that you keep it to one thread per upgrade/build for continuity purposes. Thank you!

yeah I figured so much about the PSU. its realllly cheap so I doubt i could trust it. it worries me as it is mixing hardware thats old and new, but I havent had a problem with my Hard drives or disk drives, so I think ill be okay on that one.. its all a matter of cash in my pocket, I appreciate the positive reply about the mobo though, yeah I looked into the onboard graphics for it and apparently, as onboard video goes, its pretty good, but thats still not saying much.. but, if people have been claiming up and down that the onboard video is actually pretty solid, and considering I use an ATI Radeon 9550 thats like 3 or 4 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if it blew that crap out of the water.
