New Build..Are these compatible?

Hi All..
I am in need of a new desktop and figured I'd try my hand at building my own PC.
The goals are to be reasonably fast, lots of storage for pics and movies, and be able to upgrade down the road.
I've been looking on newegg because they have free shipping right now.
My budget is about $400

How does this combo look? Anything you would change or add?

Rosewill R6426-P BK ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $25.99

Western Digital Caviar GP WD5000AACS 500GB 5400 to 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $59.99

CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Power Supply$59.99
Anybody have any experiance with this PSU?

ASUS P5QL PRO LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard
$89.99

Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E5200$83.99

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ$39.99

LITE-ON 22X DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model iHAS422-08$29.99

This puts me at $386 shipped.
Any input is appreciated

That Rosewill has no PSU and the Corsair you have chosen is an excellent unit.

You have one major issue though - you need a video card or a motherboard with onboard video. You also need an operating system. You cannot reuse an operating system that shipped with a name brand computer.

jdeb means 16mb cache, not 16gb. WD's are fine too, but I don't know about that variable speed "green" drive.

If you're budget is that low, get this mb instead: asus p5kpl-cm: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131288

That will save you money, and give you onboard video so you don't need a video card.

Then get xp home oem: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116511

Get this case/psu combo to save even more money: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811153089

The ram manufacturers didn't like the low price of DDR2, so they drastically cut production to increase the price of DDR2. DDR3 is almost the price of DDR2 now.

Also, will the the 450W Corsair power supply be sufficient for the HD4850?

Considering all the other components, 450W would be enough and Corsair makes good power supplies which usually can work at higher than their rated spec.

Ok guys, I just ordered everything mentioned above (except I got the WD black 750gb HD for $10 more).
I also got a anti-static wrist strap. Now i'm getting nervous because I've never built a PC before. I thought I saw a general "how to" guide somewhere on these forums but can't find it. Anybody have a link of a walk through that I can start reading? Any tips or pointers? I've worked on my previous store bought computers, PS2's, xbox 360's etc so I'm not completely clueless. I'm going to download and burn Ubuntu for the OS.

Thanks,
Dan

I used this great forum to build my first pc a number of years back and I know exactly how you feel. Just as long as you take your time and read all the instructions carefully you should be fine. There is a thread here some where that gives you some good pointers on how to begin your journey into building a pc but I couldn't find it either. Good luck and have fun! The experience is very rewarding and I have built about 12 systems now thanks to all the people here!

Start of by following the instructions here to make sure all your components are working: Having problems with a new build? Try this.
You can use this guide to help you build the computer: http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/

Another question...

What would you recommend for my situation? Ubuntu 32bit or 64bit?

I would go with 32-bit for now; 64-bit isn't going to help you too much (it's mostly useful for addressing more than 4GB of ram) and 32-bit is more compatible and stable. However 64-bit linux is still an ok choice, and with ubuntu getting compatible programs is quite easy, so either one should be fine.

I have run into a question on my new build. The cpu is running at 52C. According to my manual is should be running at or below 38C...Does this present a problem?

The manual almost always says that the processor should be running at around that temperature, even back in the old days of the Pentium 4 Prescott and the Pentium D which needed the fan on max at times to keep the temp from going past 60c. Is 52C idle or load temperature? If it is idle temperature, you'll need to remount your heatsink (it's a good idea to do this outside your case, so you don't flex the motherboard). The Intel heatsink mounting mechanism is kind of tricky until you get used to it; it's not a bad system, but most of the instructions aren't very helpful.

My Wolfdale idles around 36 and runs about 58 at 100% load.

I can only figure out how to check the idle temp in BIOS. How can I check the temp with the OS loaded (Ubuntu)?

I don't think you can without some kind of compatible monitoring software. 52c is definitely too hot at idle, your heatsink is not fully snapped down.

or ventilation

Maybe the case is not pulling enough air thru the box to keep things cool. The Newegg listing for that Rosewill box shows only a single 80mm fan installed. And it's on a back grille that can take a larger fan. While I don't recommend going wild with fans, one more on this system could be good. If that back opening will take a 120mm fan, that would be really good. Otherwise find a size to put on the side door on the area that looks pre-drilled. If that case has a lot of mesh area at the front, then I like to have all fans blowing out and the air will be drawn thru the case. Also that case has one of those ducts that are supposed to direct the are to the CPU fan. Check how that is lining up with the heat sink. If it looks like it is interfering with the air flow, take it off.
It's still a good idea to check the mounting of the heatsink. If you have to remove and reapply it, you may have to get some thermal compound if what was on the heatsink is too scraped up.

The CPU should run a lot cooler than that even with a case that has NO fans. It has to be an heatsink mounting issue.

Got it figured out. The CPU heatsink wasn't properly seated all the way. I looked up a video on Youtube to better explain the process and got it seated all the way. It's now running at 39C at idle.

I also have this case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147083

Which has (2) 120mm fans and a side duct that lines up perfectly to the CPU heatsink/fan.

Thanks again,
Dan

39C at idle is pretty good, if you can find a temp monitoring program for linux and run cpu burn in program, you'll have a good idea of what the load temp is. If it's under or near 60C, everything is good.

Both cores are staying under 58C @ 100% load... sounds like it's running alright?

That's about right for the stock heatsink. Looks good; if it gets too hot for your taste (gets the room too hot maybe) or it's too noisy, you may want to take a look at an aftermarket cooler, otherwise you're good to go.
