First build, on a budget

Hi everyone,

It's time for me to upgrade and I've decided to build my own machine this time around. Thing is, I'm strapped for cash. However, I think I can get a huge step forward over my current home machines for roughly $500. While I'd love to play games, if I'm honest I rarely have the time. They'd prolly be Civ and Fallout3 anyhow, so I shouldn't require anything too fancy. I do a lot of programming, however, and boy can I ever kill time surfing the web, listening to music while watching movies and writing - these will be the primary uses of this machine.

After thumbing through several other builds, I've put together the following list. This being my first time (read as: I'm a noob), I'm paranoid about compatibility. Note that the list includes a monitor upgrade - I'm tired of staring at my CRT. No OS required in my budget (will XP/Ubuntu dual boot).

I'd love any suggestions. Many thanks!

Build follows:

I have the same PSU and mobo and they are still going strong a year later. That's a nice build.

You are going to need a heatsink if you get a OEM processor, either take a look at getting a retail processor which comes with a heatsink, or take a look at getting an aftermarket heatsink such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835150087. The motherboard seems a little too expensive to me, if you don't have any specific features that you need in the motherboard you listed, take a look at a less expensive alternative such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186143. The HD4350 is slow GPU, with the money saved from getting a less expensive motherboard, get a better GPU such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127384

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback you've generously provided. Masaki, I'll take your advice regarding the heatsink and GPU. I appreciate the heads up on the Foxconn mobo, but I think I'll spend the extra $30 to have a slightly nicer mobo who's extra bells and whistles I can upgrade into over time. Here's the final build for future reference (unless anyone else has final suggestions):
