Troubleshoot - ran fine yesterday; today no boot

Hello,

I have another thread in here regarding a bad mobo that was RMAed and now I'm back

Here's a quick rundown of parts

mobo: gigatyte GA-MA770 DS3P
CPU: AMD 9850 quad-core
PSU: Corsair 750W
RAM: G Skill 2gb sticks (4gb total)
Video: Geforce 260 896mb
Antec 900 case
Samsung CDRW etcc
HD: Seagate 500gb sata

OK..here's the deal the original build booted fine etc but there was a malfunction with the PCI slots and I wasnt able to install my sound card. I received a new mobo and realized I couldnt use my IDE Western digital HD because my video card couldn't seat properly with the plug, SO I make a mad dash to Walmart (lol) and buy a SATA HD. Come home install everything (did a quick format on a small partition because I was getting anxious) and it didn't load - it was stuck at the verifying DMI data screen and signal would become lost etc. I then full format the whole drive and reinstall XP pro and everything is good (this is yesterday). I had one instance where it would hang and signal would be lost at verifying DMI and I replaced a stick of RAM and it worked. I played Fallout 3 and COD4 a lot yesterday and did a few reboots after upgrading to SP3 etc.

Fast forward to today- I go to start my computer and its all fine until the DMI screen, it doesnt hang there but the next screen is "windows didn't load properly etc" and I cannot choose safe mode or anything.

I am puzzled because all these parts worked fine in my last build - swapped the mobo and it worked yesterday and now it doesn't.

The BIOS is update to the most current version (F4) and I am stumped..I've had all these parts in another build and they work fine. I am going to take a stick of RAM out of my old comp and see if that may do the trick but the RAM that is in my new build was also in my old build (while I was waiting for the new MOBO to come back I put the CPU, GPU, RAM, PSU in my old case so I could play some games)

Apologize for making this long but I wanted to get all the important info out there. I didn't want to create a new thread but countless searches on the 'net left me with my own unique situation. Most of the people had error messages associated with their non-boots after the DMI pool hang ups. I have zero; the screen just goes black and the signal is lost after the verifying DMI data.

A big thank you ahead of time! I'm a college student and need my PC! (for studying and stress relief) LOL

thank you

UPDATE:

I ran into a few results from searching that talk about the PC hanging at GIVEISO.SYS (or similar file name) and that being tagged to Speedfan being installed. However, I cannot access the computer through safe mode to uninstall that file. However, this problem occured even before I had SpeedFan installed - so no big discovery. I am now in the process of updating the OS to Vista for the heck of it to see if that changes anything. If not - I am stumped. I am a little discouraged that most of the "pc wont boot" results happen to include gigabyte mobos ***?

Wish me luck!

UPDATE:

Inserted the vista upgrade CD and booted from CD and the status loading bar was there and when it completed instead of the screen going blank and another screen loading it went blank and hung, just like during boot up.

ARGH!

UPDATE:

So..I removed everything from my new case and used my motherboard from my other (working) computer (ASUS M2N SLI-deluxe) and installed it with all my new components in my new case etc.. So the only thing different was the mobo to rule out THAT as a problem. I boot it up and windows starts to load and i'm getting excited and then the load cursor pauses, the screen flashes to a quick blue screen of death (so fast I cannot read the message) and the computer restarts into this cycle.

Well shoot I think to myself. I swap out the HD (seagate I bought at Wal-mart) and install the IDE drive I had in my older comp. SO NOW I have the older mobo and hard drive with all the new stuff in my case and it loaded right up and works fine thus far.

WHEW...

So as it stands the HD will be returned and I am waiting for a RMAed HD that should arrive shortly from newegg.

So once that arrives I will try the new MOBO with the HD and hopefully all will work.

The new hd with a new install of windows won't load on the old mb if it's different. This has to do with drivers.

You would have to do a repair install on the new hd while it's connected to the old mb.

It sounds like you solved the problem and narrowed it down to the mb. I'm willing to bet the hd is fine.

Since it's a seagate hd, I would return it anyway cause they are having a few issues right now.

Hmm..interesting.

I just can't believe the luck if it is the MOBO again. I received an ASUS in late December and had PCI issues and RMAed it for a replacement and newegg quit stocking that specific model so I was issued a refund. I then found a comparable mobo from gigabyte and now its a dud? Crazy. I will re-attach the old (new hard drive) to the current setup and do a repair install to see if that will fix it. And two things will happen a) it won't work (HD issue) or b) it will work and i've pegged it as the mobo. This way I can tell newegg I tried everything!

Thanks for the insight regarding the drivers/HD/MOBO issue. It makes sense but I had no idea and thought I had the issue pegged.

UPDATE:

I reinstalled the other HD and updated windows etc. and it is working fine thus far. Although this HD etc. worked fine on my other mobo for a day so only time will tell.
