Newbie would greatly appreciate input on 1st build
So I've been lurking for a few weeks as I have finally decided to take the plunge and build my first PC.
The PC use will mainly by just normal daily stuff but I do some TV recording, video editing and DVD ISO storage. So I would like some real horsepower for that editing/authoring aspect of it. I dont do any huge need for high end gaming ability. Here is what I have so far. From Newegg AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition (combo with Antec case total $200) Antec Nine Hundred Case Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3HP Motherboard $85 ZALMAN 9500A CPU Cooler $60 Corsair 2x2GB PC6400 RAM $27 after rebate Artic Silver Thermal Compound $5 CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W Power Supply $100 I have some Best Buy gift certificate $ so I'll use that to buy my main HDD I will take my 2 500GB storage drives from my current PC and move them over I also have a NVidia 8600GT video card I'll be using That leaves me with an OS which I haven't settled on. I currently am running Windows 7 Beta, which I like, so I might use that on this PC and then purchase the final version when it comes available. Thoughts? I am not sold on the CPU cooler or the Power supply but I do like the rest. I'd like to keep it in the same total price range. I am certainly not the expert that many here are so thoughts, replacements, etc are welcome. Thanks. |

Unless you are going to overclock, the stock heatsink/fan is fine. You dont need thermal compound if you use stock, as it comes pre-applied.

/\/\/\ Good to know. Thanks. The CPU doesn't come with a stock cooler so I'll have to look around newegg to see if they sell it seperately.
I don't plan to overclock now but if I ever do I'll know I need to upgrade the fan & heatsink. |

I would suggest the antec three hundred for that build.
And when you buy the hd, I would get western digital.

Would there be an issue with getting the Antec nine hunred? I only ask because newegg has a strong combo deal with the case and the cpu.
Thanks |

No issues.
The three hundred is just smaller and easier to clean. It also has no window. I have a 900 and two 300's, and personally prefer the 300's now. |

Pick up a 'Retail' CPU and it will come with the heatsink/fan. You also get the full 3yr warranty this way.

I would also go with the Antec 300 over the 900. No window is a BIG plus.

I have the 900 and personally won't buy another one. To much in the way of cleaning. Seems like you clean it one day then the next day it needs it again..

Thanks all. I found the retail version of the cpu, although a bit more expensive I am perfectly fine not having to mess with compound and heatsinks.
I am curious about all the movement away from the 900. I was initially attracted to it because it had the 2 built in fans up front that would help keep my data HDD nice and cool. Which seemed like a good idea. No? If I go with the 300 would installing fans up front be not recommended? |

It will all depend on the temp inside your case. If you have two fans up front like the 900 then there is the chance of it sucking in more dust like the 900. When I get my MB, CPU back from the manufactures I'm going to eliminate one of the two fans, as I will have plenty of air flow with the 120mm in the back and the 200mm on top..

Just a random thought based on research I was doing last week on setups. What are everyone's thoughts on the Apevia cases? I like the looks and features of the Jupiter JR case and it is in the relative price ballpark of the Antec.
So I've tweaked (OK torn apart) my setup from above. Here is what I have now AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition $169 Antec 300 Case w/ Antec 500W Basiq PSU $105 Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3HP Motherboard $85 Corsair 2x2GB PC6400 RAM $27 after rebate LG GH22NS30 DVD drive $25 I have some Best Buy gift certificate $ so I'll use that to buy my main HDD I will take my 2 500GB storage drives from my current PC and move them over I also have a XFX 8600GT video card I'll be using Thoughts on the newer setup? Oh and I really do appreciate all the input. Last edited by TeddyKGB; 01-22-2009 at 10:57 PM. |

Apevia cases are fine but their power supplies are junk.

Thanks.
Just curious, is 500W going to be enough or do I need to look more towards the 650-750 range? |

The video card itself needs 400W or my proposed setup with the 8600GT needs 400W?
I actually have it running right now with a 350W in a dual core hp machine. Sorry for all the questions. |

Thanks to all again.
I got it all finished up this past week and just been tinkering with it since but now we are all good to go. The assembly was not an issue at all and was surprising easy. I doubt I'll be ever buying a off the shelf PC again after this! |

Hi all,
Just wondering about all the opposition to the Antec 900 case? Is the window a problem just because of cleaning? Or are their other problems with a window? Sorry for jumping into your thread. Thanks |
