New build help for a newbie
I am looking at building a computer for the first time and I need some help with my parts list and I also need help picking out a video card.
My budget for this build is about $650-$700. I do not need a case, montior, keyboard/mouse, or a OS. I also will only need one hard drive because I have 1 500gb drive that I will be using in this build. I will probably be installing windows XP but I might switch to vista (I haven't decided and I have copies of both). I will be using this computer primarily for 3d cad, photo editing and 3d modeling work (Revit, ArchiCAD, C4D, Adobe Suite, etc...). I will also be doing some gaming but nothing hardcore, mostly games like The Sims 3 (when it is released next month) and similar style games. I tend to lean towards Intel but if I can get more for my money with AMD I would be willing to go that route. I also am not sure if Quad or Core 2 is a better for my needs. I went with Quad but agian, if I can get more for my money with a Core 2, I'll go that route. Here is what I am looking at so far but feel free to make any suggestions: MOBO ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299 Processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 RAM G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 PSU Antec NeoPower 550 550W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103941 DVD Burner LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106264 Hard Drive Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218 That puts me at about $550 but I still need a video card. Which one will fit my needs but not be an overkill? |

A 9600GT should fit you well and not overkill:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130360 $104.99 ($84.99 after rebate) |

That looks like a good build.

I recommend ATI cards for graphics work. Nvidia is for gamers. Look at a HD3870.

Is there any specific brand that I should look at for a HD3870? Newegg is giving me a couple different ones: HIS, Sapphire, & PowerColor. Which one would you reccomend.

Sapphire and Powercolor are usually recommended.
Don't know about HIS. I recommend this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102719 $99.99 |

HIS has some very nice cooling solutions on their cards - you probably would not go wrong with those either.
